Around early 2010, a Minecraft player would briefly work with Notch during one of the most dramatic shifts in direction the game would ever see, this developer would end up adding one of the most iconic features to the game, only to be left behind as a footnote in history.

You can join my Discord here: discord.gg/EtvkZwVJ8U Consider supporting me on Patreon: www.patreon.com/randomsageless Hello Everyone, I hope you enjoyed this video, it's a major shift in direction from my normal content and I'm thinking of making other history based videos that go over neat little stories. I also spent about a month working on my skills as an editor and scriptwriter, I may have gone a bit overboard so please tell me if the transitions and animations were too much. Going forward it'll probably mellow out as I was trying a lot of different things. While there really isn't a lot of scrutiny in the Minecraft community about getting claims made in videos correct, it's still important to me, and it's necessary to warn that most of the video comes from Paul Spooner's perspective and what he's said about it, as far as I know Notch and any others haven't really chimed in, so it's unlikely this story is 100% accurate, still, I try to find evidence of anything I say, a lot of the citations on the MC wiki are broken links or not relevant to what's written so I try to leave all that out. So hopefully it's like.. >90% accurate!

to say that his influence was "felt" in the beginning of the modding community is an understatement, he was THE guy to go to. awesome video sage, the editing on this one was actually peak :D

Early Minecraft seems so chaotic and magical, there's just so much mystique around them. While Minecraft may someday be toppled as the king of its genre, the history is truly unmatched and irreplicable .
  • @Grem_MC
It’s great that your keeping the lesser known history of the game’s development alive
  • @stranger2642
man i feel bad for the guy to be so important but not known by new players
  • @TryHardCentral
Man when notch tried to turn mc into a hardcore fantasy game it actually looked so beautiful
  • @MrLordSith
I didn't know the dirt huts were meant to be for official villages, wow!! Great video
  • @JenInMinecraft
I remember adding mods to Minecraft Alpha, having to modify the jar file (to remove META-INF) and seeing the folder/files named "PaulsCode". Always wondered what that was.
  • well, the guy got paid, and he did get credited, so in the end it was a good story, a story about how a player of minecraft got to help develop the game
  • @xGOKOPx
The copyright dispute about tree code seems weird. If Notch wanted Paul to do work for him, he should've hired him. That would place them in a pretty clear place legally regarding the code

Thanks for making this video! I'm honored to have been a small part of the Minecraft experience, and it's nice to be remembered. 3:08 Yes, you did mess up the description of the distinction of a script from a mod, but you acknowledged it so kudos. 5:18 It's worth mentioning that starstone got an unofficial nod from the modding community by the addition of meteor impacts in the hexit modpack. Here's a video I made recently with more details: youtube.com/live/jtJYMgkFmsE

His idea to change trees by "modding" is potential reason we have bigger oak trees and spruce, jungle biomes what a legend

The more I hear about the early Minecraft days, the more I realize how advanced they actually were. I started paying attention to the game in Alpha, and bought it in Beta. I always had the impression that things before these versions were very primitive and simple. However, with you and several others making videos on Classic/Indev/Infdev versions, I realize they were far from simple. Until recently, I had no idea they were making such intricate builds and creating fairly advanced mods and server plugins back then. Very cool to learn about!

The title and description do sound interesting, can't wait for the video to release.
  • @mau2172
Great video. Despite the mundaine nature of the story, the presentation of the video really did manage to make it as compelling as many others pertaining to the game's legacy. I love that little stories like this one get to be told to so many people.
  • @leomaso7894
i love seeing little sneak peeks of the way things ended up. stuff like this reminds me that we really do all have the capacity to make a meaningful difference, even if in this case his contribution was largely something i hate dealing with whenever a big tree grows and its annoying to chop down... lol
  • @flamingcookies
I like this video's visual style, it feels really unique and high-effort. Nice work!
