Microsoft is Ruining Minecraft (but not really)

Published 2022-08-05
In today's video we're taking a look at what Microsoft has been doing to not just Minecraft, but Java, Bedrock, and Mojang. Everyone is talking about 1.19.1 but we'll be going over pretty much everything. From the Microsoft Account Migration to the Marketplace and Minecoins, I hope you enjoyed the video!

I don't think this is the best video I've ever uploaded, but I wanted to experiment with getting a video out in a timely manner, as well as practice on my editing skills and trying out a lot of different things, my main issues with it is I don't think I discussed my opinions properly on the matter, and may come off as dismissive of Java player's concerns.

  • Hey guys, I know I say this literally every time but I'm not super proud of the script for this video, I think I could have explained some of my points later on a bit better and ended it a bit more properly, but the main purpose behind getting this video was editing experience and practicing with getting videos out in a timely matter. I'm super excited for next episode!

Honestly I fell really bad for Agnes she seems like a really nice and happy person that’s been withered down to sadness from all of the stress

Minecraft has been making series’s on their YouTube channel, and recently the last episode of their “Secrets of Minecraft” series, however there’s some stuff in the video that people have pointed out to be a bit suspicious. At the beginning of the video, a character named Jonathan is shown showing a feature that will “change Minecraft forever”. Afterwards, one of the two hosts of the show, who in the previous episode was shown the “future of Minecraft”, is trying to say what the feature is, and eventually reveals that they’re adding “Mobbo” to the game, who was a character that was originally shown in the “How we Make Minecraft” series, who’s whole point was that he defyed all of Mojang’s rules when adding a mob to the game. He says that it was a desperate attempt to boost sales, and that it will ruin the game forever. After the two hosts see Jonathan adding Mobbo to the game, the same host from before mentions that he “warned everyone about this two years ago.”

Many people in the comments see this video as a “cry of help” from Mojang, and that Jonathan represents Microsoft and Mobbo represents the chat reporting feature. This is further solidified by the fact that “two years ago” was also when the account migration was announced. I don’t have a specific view on this, nor do I think it's 100% true, it's just something I wanted to point out.

I've seen a lot of people call 1.19.1 a "controversial" update, when it is NOT. a controversy is something with 2 sides. Nearly NO ONE is in favor of getting banned by a power hungry corporation

I think it's likely that this is a combination of microsoft and mojang's fault, although one thing is certain: this is not the fault of the developers, and whoever made this decision has set the devs up to take the blame. As if they didn't have enough to deal with already.

“Maybe instead of directing your outrage to the artist, consider the business man”
The most mature thing I’ve heard anybody say from our generations. It is about time horrible corporate shitters pay for what they all suck at.
  • My biggest fear with the updates they seem to be peddling is that they’re going to try and phase out the ability to access older versions in Java. I’m a modded player and almost only play modded Minecraft. So with the marketplace in bedrock I’m really worried they’re gonna phase out the older versions so they can introduce a marketplace system and destroy the modding community. I could see them arguing something like “we’re phasing out the old versions so because of the moderation and player reporting system” just to introduce the marketplace to Java the next update.
  • "Trust me, this is a positive change. Nothing is going to change about the game"

Funny how it's coming from a 'right-side up' Dinnerbone
  • @Thermoze_
My main fear for java is that they will implement the marketplace feature, and remove regular moding capabilities.
    For the sake of 'compatability'
  • Just to clarify, the "pointless warning popups" are actually about the serious log4j exploit that happened a while ago. Since the older versions of minecraft don't have a fix for the log4j exploit, the only way to stop the log4j exploit on older versions is for the owners of the server you are on to launch the server using a line of code that looks something like this: "NoFormatMsgLookups=true" I'm pretty sure this is the only time people really used this for fixing that exploit. This applies to not only minecraft, but things like large social companies like discord. I'm reasonable sure that most of the companies fixed this by now, but since mojang doesn't want to go through each and every version of minecraft available to players and adding a fix to the apache log4j issue, they just made that warning. I think that this is kinda lazy of mojang to basically give away thousands of accounts to malicious coders because they couldn't just put that code into each and every version of minecraft.
That last part about mojang being lazy is not fully backed up, but I have my sources on the rest of those things

The Minecraft I love will never die no matter what. It will forever inside my heart.
  • @zx_fra
what microsoft is doing with minecraft is to make the game as globalized as possible, stupid packages in the marketplace, new pre-established systems for the chat filter, lack of support and almost total absence of dialogue with the community.
This is not minecraft and is not coming back to us like the gold days.
  • @donoldpie2731
As a Beta 1.7.3 Player i can agree that the Marketplace is an ugly way for greedy creators to make Money and also that Stolen Content (Aether&Faithfull) exists is just disgusting! Kingbdogz an official Developer of Minecraft can't do ANYTHING about it.
  • @Berh
This game made a lot of my life
    and now they're ruining it.
so many fond memories playing this. actually pretty scary to think it'll be over soon.
  • Microsoft started ruining Minecraft when they changed the display name of Pocket Edition to just Minecraft, and then changed real Minecraft to Minecraft: "Java Edition." And that will forever be the biggest insult to this game in my eyes, still hate that change.

Really the worst change to any game you could make is corporatization. I grew up with Minecraft, played it thousands of hours for 6+ years, it's been sad watching not only myself drift away from the game, but also the small indie-game freshness, air of mystery, and the old community surrounding all of it.
  • The reason the outrage is directed towards mojang is because we know microsoft won't listen. Its not just outrage for the sake of outrage. Its outrage to prevent the neutering of Java, the last bastion of truly free Minecraft.
  • @Enirom
Them adding reporting system is like youtube removing dislikes
  • @afriendlyfox
What I am afraid of is that eventually they'll ban any mods that try to tamper with the "safety" features like the chat reporting and there would be no way around this nightmare.
