I'm studying to become a firefighter and one of my instructors actually used this incident to explain why even though emergencies may need an immediate response, it is important to take the time to do all the right safety checks and inspections, especially if there are already multiple victims. Rushing directly into a scene will get people hurt. If you know multiple people have entered an area and got hurt, it's worth it to hang back and let professionals bring them out safely.

My grandparents were very adamant about every cellar having air circulation with the outside. They had wine barrels and a lot of potatoes. They knew about the dangers of wine production, but I never heard them talking about the dangers of potato. Actually every now and then we the kids were tasked to "rotate" the potatoes, meaning to move hundreds of Kgs of potato from one area to the other by hand. What was on top gets on the bottom and the bad ones got thrown away into the manure. Happy days...
