Colonialism, Religion and the Tablighi Jamaat - Arsalan Khan - #TPE 355

Published 2024-03-28
Arsalan Khan is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Arsalan Khan comes on The Pakistan Experience to discuss his book on the Tablighi Jamaat of PAkistan, "The Promise of Piety".

On this week's episode we discuss Colonialism, Religion, The Tablighi Jamaat, Maulana Tariq Jameel, TLP, Taliban, Revivalist Movements and the importance of rituals.

In The Promise of Piety, Arsalan Khan examines the zealous commitment to a distinct form of face-to-face preaching (dawat) among Pakistani Tablighis, practitioners of the transnational Islamic piety movement the Tablighi Jamaat. This group says that Muslims have abandoned their religious duties for worldly pursuits, creating a state of moral chaos apparent in the breakdown of relationships in the family, nation, and global Islamic community. Tablighis insist that this dire situation can only be remedied by drawing Muslims back to Islam through dawat, which they regard as the sacred means for spreading Islamic virtue. In a country founded in the name of Muslim identity and where Islam is ubiquitous in public life, the Tablighi claim that Pakistani Muslims have abandoned Islam is particularly striking.

The Promise of Piety shows how Tablighis constitute a distinct form of pious relationality in the ritual processes and everyday practices of dawat and how pious relationality serves as a basis for transforming domestic and public life. Khan explores both the promise and limits of the Tablighi project of creating an Islamic moral order that can transcend the political fragmentation and violence of life in postcolonial Pakistan.

What a load of BS seriously. The founder of Hindutva ideology was a staunch atheist who also worked towards eradication of caste system. Seems like the only thing this guy has read about indian politics are tweets from 19yo indians who've just discovered karl marx.🤣
  • @saggarwal01
Hindutva is a complex ideology and is misunderstood by oversimplification, Islam seems to be a simple philosophy which is misunderstood by making it complex
  • Dalits don't consider themselves Hindu?..Please for gods sake, ask such questions to actual Dalits from India instead of these "experts"
  • @iSuhag
Interestingly over 90 % population of HIndu is either ST/SC or OBC. Upper cast is just less than 10% . So Whole Hinduism stand tall because of ST/Sc and OBC. They are so much committed for Hindu Dharma . And We are Proud of them.

Arey pagal dalit schedule caste Hindus ke liye ek term hai.... Woh koi ek separate community nhi hai.... Me bhi schedule caste hu... Or 90% hindutva people are of schedule caste like me.... Including balasaheb thakre and modi
  • @p-a-a-r-o

  • @lordanubysh
About the whole hindutva thing, how about we refrain from talking about things we don’t understand? Or is every Pakistani like their generals expert on everything???
  • @amit9023

  • The state of Pakistan, the mullahs, medical doctors, scientists, nutritionists, dental surgeons, Waderas, aristocrats, mazar based peers have let the people of Pakistan down. They are living in dolorble conditions.
  • At the beginning I was expecting hypocrisy and lies , at the end once again they fulfill my expectations. Thanks for the entertainment.

He is so wrong on Hindutava. Bro if these are your intellectual than better call Tabliqi Jamat guy for podcast.
  • @Pratik-0-0-7
On the question of Hindutva, the professor seems to have definitive answers, but on religious populism, PTI, and Imran Khan, he flickered, highlighting his double standards and hypocrisy.
  • @nil0355
The professor is right about Hindutva's attitude towards Islam but he isnt well aware about Hindutva's attitude towards Dalits. Hindutva and more generally modern Hinduism major project has been to incorporate Dalits into mainstream Hinduism. Of course this project hasn't been easy fighting ancient bigotry but things have improved significantly and there are clear signs it will improve more in the coming decades.

7:52 - 8:19 Shahzad trying too hard to shift the blame for solidification of Muslim Identity in the sub continent and the Muslim consciousness as NOT HINDU on the British Colonial Master 😅 While Clergymen since before the time of Barani had been hell bent at demonizing the Hindu Practises and the Hindus, the Sufis had been hand in glove with the Muslim Ruling dispensation of the Middle Ages in co ersing the Hindus to convert and much of the Muslim Clergy, Nobility and Ruling Housea had time and again used War and Taxation as means for propagation and spread of Islam. The issue is complete HATRED and INTOLERANCE of Idol Worship and Polytheism in ISLAM. THE BRITISH WERE ONLY EXPLOITING WHAT HAS BEEN PRE ORDAINED IN ISLAM FOR BRITISH INTERESTS. BRITISH DIDNT GIVE ISLAM TO THE HUMANITY AND THE WORLD

Wished the guest had enlighten more on the hierarchies with in the tableghi jamaat and their modus operandi like if we are talking about a city tableeghi Jamat would have a number of masjids and imams, the topic of jummah khutba are decided mutually, for every muhalla or colony there is a an Ameer/responsible then there are weekly meeting called mashwaras and on each alternative day of the week they do "gasht" mostly in the evenings where they often go door or door or preach in public places, then often on different masjids members go and after the namaz they quickly get and preach in a way that any person would feel bad to walk out even if they want to, lot more things i find tableeghi jamaat rituals very thoughtful and properly managed..
