I can never get enough of this rendition......... this is by far the best best quality rendition. What a pairing of Joan and the Funk Bros. Absolute magic!!!!!!
  • I first saw "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" (in the late-lamented Guild 45th theater here in Seattle) when the movie was first released At the end of Joan Osborne's cover of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted", the movie theater audience immediatley burst into a wild round of loud cheering and applause which eneded with the entire theater audience giving her a standing ovation - in a movie theater - right in the middle of the movie!! Never experienced anything remotely like that in a movie theater before or since. But it was absolutely the perfect response at the perfect moment.
  • Ms. Joan absolutely now OWNS this song !! When I first saw the movie ("STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN") everybody in the audience stood up & cheered at the end !! I couldn't remember the last time so many people were touched by a movie !! I stayed and watched it a 2nd time - the same thing happened !! Finally THE FUNK BROTHERS were getting their long overdue recognition. DID THEY STILL HAVE IT ?? THEY WILL...FOREVER !! God bless you Joan.
  • Joan and the Funk Brothers just kill it. One of the greatest Motown songs given an epic performance.

Imagine what an experience it must have been to have seen this performance live! Absolute perfection!

She and the Funk Brothers crush this song. Amazing.

LOVE THOSE DRUMMERS AND BACKUP SINGERS! Fabulous! Not to mention all the brass!!!
  • And that ladies and gentlement is how it is done. That is SOUL DEEP, and heaven bound.
  • To sing it like this you know she has “lived it” like so many others have.

I never get tired of hearing this beautiful song by Joan and the Funk Brothers.... What wonderful talent that will not ever be replicated.

The Funk Brothers and Joan nail this to the wall! Damn great to see these legends perform. More, more, they just don’t do music this good anymore.
  • She was my Wife and soulmate and died in my arms 25 years ago. This song expresses my feelings so well. The pain of loss never goes away.
  • Being a bass player and Jamerson devotee { Babbitt was no slouch on bass either - as he so amply demonstrates here } I watched the SITSOM movie with a great deal of enthusiasm and was completely blown away, especially by this performance. The song is timeless. Joan Osborn is stellar. The band is magnificent. One of the greatest live performances of a Motown hit, EVER and the very essence of great soul music. Jimmy Ruffin would be proud. 🙂

This song I like, but it puts me back into vietnam 67-68 love time, hate time. I was so homesick I could cry. Her voice kept me moving on now I'm 76, still love her

When something comes off perfectly, you sense it in your core, even if you can't verbalize the feeling. This is perfect. I must have watched this a hundred times, and every time it just guts me. Wonderful cover by Joan and the Funk Brothers!
  • Absolutely one of the best, if not the best, live covers of a classic that I've ever heard in my life.. The Funk Brothers still had it twenty years ago, and Joan Osborne, with her inspired, raspy voice ranging all over the song, is just spine tingling. Absolute perfection - and done live to boot. Try replicating that energy and sublime performance in a studio with autotune. I double-dog dare anyone.

Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since this was recorded for the amazing documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown. And now with Jack Ashford being the last surviving member of the Funk Brothers, this masterful performance all the more poignant.

This gives me chills EVERYTIME I watch this video. I feel sure Jimmy Ruffin is tipping his hat to Joan!
