Despite flopping theatrically in 1986, Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert as an immortal warrior named Connor MacLeod, was an international hit at the box office and cleaned up on home video. After a disappointing sequel (Highlander 2: The Quickening), the decision was made to spin the franchise off into a TV show, Highlander: The Series. The show, which starred Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, ran for six seasons, spawning a spin-off (Highlander The Raven) and two films (Highlander: Endgame Highlander: The Source).

In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we take a look into the show's origins, including the pilot, which featured Christopher Lambert as Connor, the spin-offs, feature films and the show’s enduring legacy.

I love "Highlander" but I do laugh when I think of this- a Scotsman is played by a Frenchman, trained by a Spannish noble who's secretly Egyptian, played by a real Scotsman.

One of my favorite ideas from the series was that the "good" immortals had quietly and collectively decided that having a close-knit circle of friends and allies to hang out with through the rest of Human history was more valuable than whatever the Prize could be. The good guys choosing friendship and love over personal power was the morality the rest of the show was built on.
  • One of my favorite things about the Highlander series was the use of flashbacks as a B-plot. It gave us a glimpse of what immortality was like for these characters, and really let everyone stretch their acting, costuming, and set design.

I named my son Connor and his brother Duncan. Yeah...i went there.

In 1994 I worked in a nightclub in Vancouver that held an event every Thursday night. It was called "Chocolate Milk" and it was one of the first spaces to use ambient lounge sounding music in a relaxed setting. It was the place to be at that time, and many "famous" people would show up. Adrian Paul was one of those regulars, and he was a complete joy to deal with. Always super friendly and just a nice guy. I was also lucky enough to see them filming some episodes around the city at times, it was a great series!

To me when Tessa died is the saddest tv moment ever. I always think of it when I hear Dust in The Wind.

Not sure how you managed to not mention the unequaled Roger Daltrey as Fitzcairn. Every time he showed up I knew we were going to be in for an extremely entertaining episode!

For someone who said his favorite episodes were the ones with Methos' back story with the Horseman, it's unforgivable how badly you mangled his name not just once, but nearly a dozen times.

Highlander was one of my favorite TV series of the 90s. It had everything you could want from a show: great action sequences, a charismatic lead, and decent historical set pieces, given the limited budget. Its focus on history, seen through the eyes of Duncan MacCleod, was what made the show distinct from all the other shows of that era. Very few shows, especially at that time, brought history to life the way Highlander did. It even made people, who didn't have much of an interest in history before, take an interest. The show did for history what MacGyver did for piquing an interesting in science.
  • Highlander the Series was a show that was so influential to me as a teenager. Duncan spoke so many languages, and had lived so many lives and as a kid from a small town it just resonated with me on so many levels.
  • It's rare when a series spawned from a movie was better than the movie. But with Highlander, it's just that. Love it to this day.

After watching this video. I remembered the actor Adrian Paul, who played Duncan in the Highlander series talking about not being worried about the combat he had to do with other immortals, his struggle, was dealing with going on living while all the people he knew, friends, family pass away, and you have to keep living, century after century. It is still today my favorite tv series of all time. I really respected how Adrian Paul put the effort towards all the fighting, and sword fighting in the series, and a very good actor as well. Take care.
  • @Lordradost
Adrian Paul was amazing in one of the best series of it's time: deep stories dealing with complexity . "More good episodes than bad ones" for sure. RIP Stan Kirsch.
  • @MalcomMcLeod
You forgot to mention Adrian Paul's martial arts skills to perform all those fight scenes. That was a big factor in the success of the show for me. Adrian has The Sword Experience where he teaches stage combat.
  • @ToyLatrine
Watched the show with my Papa every Sunday. Freaking LOVED our Sunday night dinner / Highlander hangout. What a great childhood! Memoirs!!!! 😢😢😢RIP papa!
  • @jasonq7504
When we lean that Ritchie is immortal, we understand why Duncan kept him around, almost always within eyesight. He was protecting him from other Immortals, most of which didn't take an interest in one so young.

FYI. Peter Wingfield's character was Methos, not Metos. I too was a huge fan of the series. I ordered the catalogs they advertised during the shows run and bought merchandise from it.
  • @Mechaneer
I was really into the tv show in junior high and early high school with my best friend who turned me on to it. Our favorite characters, of course, were Duncan and Methos, and I think watching it contributed to our own version of dungeons and dragons that we played with a few other friends. It's interesting that Peter Wingfield stayed in LA but left acting to pursue a medical career. Thanks for the nostalgia!
