Overweight Drive Helix 57D: Elite Wheels Responds to the false weight claims | RobbArmstrong

Published 2024-05-25
Bottom line up front, the Helix wheelset is overweight, ☹️ but... Elite Wheels did reach out to me regarding the weight claims. To backfill new viewers, the Helix line of wheels were released on March 29th and I was fortunate enough to order a set. Upon arrival of the new wheels, they were inspected and weighed. This is where the discrepancy unfolds.

More About the *Helix 57D

The Drive Helix 57D was designed to be the ultimate all-round performance wheelset. Being part of our first ultra-premium wheel series, it is the best choice for riders who want a balance of aerodynamics and lightweight for both the climbs, the flats, and everything in between. Drawing inspiration from our popular Drive road wheels, the 57D uses replaceable carbon spokes, UNI carbon fiber, and TPI ceramic bearings.

What sets these new wheels apart isn’t just the new aero, undulating rim profiles and improved carbon spoke design, but also the innovative Helical Dual Ratchet System, which gives this new wheelset its name.

Now we have that out the way, lets see what Elite Wheels has to say. Let's get to it!

Robb, You have a point here. The entire bike industry fudge's with the weight of every part, even complete bicycles. They should just either be 100% honest or say the variance is a larger percentage. I weighed every part of my new SRAM Red groupset and found my groupset was 100 grams lighter than advertised. That's great, that's the first time I have experienced the advertised weight being more than the parts that I received.
  • good information. because weight was the real question.... currently i got hyper and i wanna go lighter... so CRW makes sense for me... not helix anymore...

I have the 68Ds and I didnt weigh them before installing. Not because I forgot but because I bought them not with weight in mind but the aero gains and the caveat to that is added weight. Regardless of if my wheel set is 100grams over, I set a new 20min PB on a local loop at 41.4kph avg with the 68Ds. If the weight was an issue, it would have had the opposite effect. Im really enjoying mine.

I definitely understand and feel your initial frustration when you weighed your wheels and they were much heavier than advertised. The same thing happened to me when I bought the New Black Inc. 48|58 wheels. They also had an incorrect weight advertised on their website at 1,250 gr. They actually weigh 1,360 gr. I complained and they changed their website weight to 1290gr. which is still wrong. They have a note next to the weight that says *"Excludes Tubeless Tape and Certain Metal Parts". What the heck does that mean??? It sounds like some other metal part(s) from the freehub was removed along with the Valves when they weighed the wheels.
  • Hey man , as you know or hope to remember I bought the 46d and received them yesterday and got the same mail from elite regarding the overweight. Initially the 46d were at 1280gr+/-30gr. As mentioned in Anthony's mail the update the website and now they are listed at 1335+/-30 gr(without the tape and the valves). Mine were at 1391gr tape and valves on and without they are at 1330gr so 5 gr under what is now listed on the website. I decided to keep the wheels, I like them to much and don't think you'll find better in this price range. I also got the 50 € back plus a 50€ voucher as they said, so I'm pretty happy overall. Cheers 😉

Wheels are weighed without valves and rim tape. You have to account for 30 to 40 g for the valves and for the rim tape now they’re still overweight by a little bit but not much which explains why they changed the list to wait to 1420.

Received the same email on May 20th for the 46D I purchased.
  • @jackliang6061
They weigh it without valve and tape. That’s pretty common to do. Basically all the big brands are doing it like this. For the price point it’s still a competitive weight

The fact is, in cycling weight is money. E.g an S-works frame cost thousands more than their standard frame for 100 grams saving. Many companies both Western and eastern advertise false weight claims on their frames and wheels. The bike brand Fakctor (lol) have recently added 100 grams on their advertised weight claims after I challenged them and a YT video was released. Always remember: weight is money. Falso advertising is illegal in most countries.

I think you have to wait for the next gen wheels from wheelsfar / farsports. Currently most rims and hubs are designed for 24 spokes, but when using carbon, 20 spokes will be enough. Afaik there are no wavy rims for 20 spokes so far. However, if you're cool with regular rims, you can already get superlight deep wheels from wheelsfar (<1200g). I'm personally waiting for the upcoming mainstream carbon spokes and hubs (e.g. from dt swiss). Once there is 40mm deep and 30mm wide set below 1150g that is serviceable I'm going to buy it. I'm also a fan of these new rims that don't have any holes, so you can run it without tubeless tape. Please make a video about your current config on the Ostro. I want to provide weightweenie feedback for all the parts.
