12 Days in a Controversial Cabin With a Blocked View

How much is a good view from a cabin worth? I put it to the test by booking an 'obstructed view' cabin with no idea about what would be obstructing it or how much.

I’m currently on a cruise and I’m staying in a balcony cabin that has a quirky downside that I’ve never had on a cruise ship before.

The cruise lines don’t advertise cabins like these and most people have no idea that they exist. I found this cabin almost by accident and booked it because of the discount price.

Like quirky cabins? Check out these from my controversial cabin series:
This cabin faces INSIDE the ship:    • 7 Days In a Controversial Cabin That ...
This cabin faces backwards:    • I Cruised in a Cabin That Faces BACKW...
This bathroom has a glass wall!    • Nowhere to Hide: I Stayed in The Weir...

This cruise has taken us from Singapore to Tokyo and for me it has been a real bucket list adventure, like most bucket list things though it hasn’t been cheap and when booking I knew that the flights from the uk would likely cost more than the cruise itself.

With that in mind, I really didn’t want to spend more than I had to on the cabin but I also didn’t want to miss out on anything as I’d come half way around the world for this trip. I didn’t want to book an inside cabin and miss out on seeing something incredible, but also didn’t want to pay full price for a balcony which was almost double the inside cabin price. This was already the most expensive trip I’d ever planned.

I decided to compromise and try something new. I booked what is called an obstructed view cabin and I really hoped that I wouldn’t regret it.

There have been both negatives and positives that I hadn’t considered before the cruise, even though I thought I was well prepared.

To save a little more money I booked what is called a guaranteed cabin, that meant that I didn’t pick my specific location and could be given a cabin anywhere on the ship and most importantly for me, with any level of obstruction. I could have a tiny thing obstructing the bottom corner of my view. Or I could be facing a lifeboat head on, with no view of the ocean at all.

The lifeboats usually are a lovely colour but that didn’t mean that I wanted to stare at one for 12 days.
A couple of months before the cruise my cabin was assigned, when the email popped up I was excited, but a little nervous, I hoped that I’d made the right decision.

  • ''Captain Hudson was recognized and it was decided ne needed some friends'' that is so awesome ahahah. Love the review !

I think using the lifeboats as tenders is a SUPER idea!!! ... When an emergency arises, the crew would be SO comfortable with getting everyone to safety as they use them fairly regularly. GREAT idea financially too, those things must be worth a fortune! .. Great multi-use feature!

Hi Emma, Just want to say I enjoy your videos. I'm a travel agent in the US, and getting first hand looks and opinions that aren't shined up by the cruiselines is invaluable! The subtleties like what the viewing area in a theater is like, what options there are on the menus, how much motion is felt on board... All helpful. I have absolutely applied these to how I book and hopefully that's had a positive impact on people's vacations. Keep it up and hope to see more ships!

All those towel animals made me smile. I assume you did also when you saw them. Having the lifeboat there really doesn't seem like a major issue. It actually gave more privacy when seated out there. I'd have been more bothered by the bass thump from the club below
  • A good idea for balconies in cabins like this would be high seats with a tray attached, like an adapted lifeguard seat. Guests could sit with a drink & enjoy a better view.

I don 't find this cabin bad. It is at a discount price - I would definitely take it.

I am just going to say it otherwise it will bug me. the "white metal parts" as you called them are called Davits. more specifically Gravity davits/ Gravity Multi pivot davits which are industry standard/Most common on cruise ships. Lifeboats used as Tenders is more common than people realise.I was trained to release, Prep etc a lifeboat but never really had to do it even for Tender ports.
  • @dvandkq
The metal parts that raise and lower the lifeboats are called "davits". 🙂
  • I recently had surgery and discovered your channel during recovery. Thanks for taking me on so many adventures! Your content was a bright spot.

Great video Emma! Love the way you present info - super clear and a very honest take. Well done!
  • Thank you Emma. I’m going on this ship in two weeks time. I’m travelling solo in a Studio Balcony room with obstructed view. It’s a four night cruise from Singapore to Penang and Phuket. I’m aware that the view could be good, to quite obstructed, but the price was very affordable and being on my own, I don’t think I’ll be in my room a great deal except for sleeping. Also, due to it being the tropics, I’m sure I won’t be sitting on the balcony alone for extended periods. The ship is huge, which is a first for me, and I’ll be busy doing many other things than worrying about the view. It is way more preferable to me to see the sky from my bed. So, Thankyou again…love your videos and adventures! Warm regards from Perth Western Australia 🇦🇺

when I first found your channel, I was thinking, cruising is not my thing, but I love these videos because ships fascinate me. Now I find myself thinking “when I go on a cruise…”😂
  • @JaninaPreu
Only started watching your content a few weeks ago and now have pretty much caught up with everything already 😁 Now I am thinking about planning my first ever cruise as well! Thanks for the inspiration ☺
  • @LifeWellCruised
What an amazing cruise! I had an obstructed balcony cabin on a past cruise & it was just a bit more than interior, so worth it. Your cabin was actually super nice!
  • @averageday
Yay! The Spectrum reviews are here! So much to look forward to! Thx for the tips Emma!
  • @carolfinnis6152
Great video Emma but that cabin would be awful for me! Love the towel creations 🤣

Hi Emma, Im currently in Yucatan Mexico and the heat & humidity has been insane. Dripping w sweat just standing still - it was 47 C w humidex today. Even linen feels too heavy to wear. So i totally understand what you mean. Your cabin looked great and Im happy you got to do a bucket list cruise 😊
