No More Quality Parts! Failures Right Outta the Box!

Not one, not two- but THREE faulty master cylinders! If we can't buy quality parts, how are we supposed to keep hot rodding alive? We try our best to see if we can find the problem with our two culprits but maybe we need to try and preserve what's already working on the car instead?

I was rebuilding wheel cylinders and master cylinders in brake shop in 1971 when I was 17. We had tools called "go/no go" gauges to slide into the bore. If the gauge went into the bore, it had been honed too far and it was junk. If the gauge didn't slide into the bore, the casting was okay. If honed enough to get rid of pits in the bore, many times the gauge would slide in. We were rebuilding parts for fifties and sixties cars then. Many failed. If those are original castings, they could be 50 years older than the ones I was rebuilding.
  • I think YouTube channels like yours and mine are actually helping the hobby... Teaching people that cars don't need to be perfect to enjoy them.

Wear gloves, brother, while using chemicals. Old man Dan will thank you, nerve damage is no joke. Stay safe. Love the channel.

Take the one that came off the car apart, you might find that it has better parts inside than the new, "rebuilt" ones. Hone it out just enough to clean up the bore, clean the parts well with fresh brake fluid (not brake cleaner) and re-assemble.

Dan, Daniel my brother, it's not just you. It's happening everywhere. Happened to me with window regulators. Hang in there. Signed, your friend, the Cancer guy. 😊

We got tons of bad, brand new parts for printing machinery from Germany. Holes not drilled, not threaded, not bored to final size. No keyways, dead motors right out of the box. You name it.

Thanks for talking about this issue of poor quality parts. A huge issue. Now try to buy made in the USA parts - at least they fit.

When honing master cylinders and brake cylinders, hone very SLOWLY in and out as to NOT create a cross hatched pattern. When honing ENGINE cylinders, DO go in and out quickly as TO create a cross hatched pattern. Yes, the cylinder may be junk but if it was honed in and out quickly from the factory, you will have leaks because the cross hatch wil pass fluid !!! Also, you may have the wrong part in it from the factory as you suggested. :goodvibes:

It's not the camshaft..had the same experience you did with your comp cam...tore my newly rebuilt engine down to the bare bones again, replaced all the bearings, refaced the oil pump, scrubbed the whole damn thing clean as a whistle, then started talking to cam grinders. The consensus was that flat tappet lifters are lacking in quality control, getting shipped out ground flat rather than convex on their faces. A local guy I trust ground my new cam, and the lifters came from a local parts guy who's a real good friend..we checked the new lifters with a straight edge, no convex grind.. We ordered four sets from four different sources before we got a good set of lifters.. Used break in oil (a first for me) and did a religious break-in (also a first) and here we are about 3k miles down the road with no issues, knock on wood. You're not wrong though..in general, aftermarket parts suck ass these days..it's come to the point that I prefer to go junkyard hopping for good used OEM crap instead..

It’s a shame companies don’t give a rats ass about the consumer. What’s a guy to do 🤷🏼‍♂️ . Best of luck Dan 🇨🇦

Here we go again. It’s time for another good one 👍👍

I experienced that same problem on a 69 Cougar, went through 2 vacuum boosters and 3 master cylinders. Quality control is right out the window now. I feel your pain.
  • I can't prove it, but if those masters were originally OEM (SAE) and then got rebuilt overseas, I'm betting the new internals are metric and they won't seal properly.
  • @boatnut64
Had to replace my Master (had an internal leak) Put the new one on, and almost immediately, the passenger side caliper started dragging and overheating. I figured it was the hose (don't know how old they are) so I had to "order" hoses and wait a couple days... When I went to change the hose, I found nothing wrong with it... So I ordered (and had to wait a few days for) new calipers... Changed everything out, and the drivers side started dragging and overheating... Tore the new master apart and found a bunch of silicone grease in all of the seals... I cleaned all the grease out, and put the seals into the old master (I hadn't thrown it out yet) and everything works properly again... Don't even ask about the fuel pump fiasco (that left me stranded and towing, twice) New Parts are CRAP...

I feel your pain brother, I dont understand any of this, almost like they are supplying is with junk on purpose, very frustrating.
  • @rodney1818
Remind me at the early nineties when it took me six months to find a right side caliper for a three quarter ton 1971 ford truck
  • @mrbill8542
Like Eric O always says--just because the parts are new ,doesn't mean they're any good !!
  • Good afternoon from Cape Cod ⚓ it's a shame the amount of junk on the market today, I went through my share of parts companies. Summit racing seems to be on point as far as quality. ✌️🇺🇲🇨🇦
