How To Grow Your Average Viewers & Get More Chatters On Twitch:

First things first in this giant list, one of the most powerful ways to increase chat activity is… well... having chatters already… I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I promise it’s important to understand and yes, there are tips for people with no viewers in this video later but I need to get this out of the way.

Nothing makes someone more likely to chat than seeing others already engaging, if you’re new or just starting out, I recommend asking some friends to hang out in your chat and have a chat with you, it helps boost your average viewers, and if someone new drops by and can join in on the conversation than those friends can greet the new viewer, and welcome them into both the conversation and the community.

The important thing to remember here is they need to be able to join in, if the back and forth is super in-depth, unrelatable, or personal then-new viewers will likely leave rather than try to join in.

How To Use Open-Ended Questions To Get More Chatters?

If you’ve ever desperately googled the question, “How to make friends” like I did as a teenager, then you’ll know that one of the best ways to start conversations and get to know people is by using open-ended questions. Granted we aren’t looking to make friends, but the concept is the same.

If you have a few chatters, or viewers and want to engage them than asking yes or no questions isn’t the right approach, you should ask open ended questions that allow for elaboration, such as “Man, I watched my favourite movie the other day Stardust, and it got me thinking, what are your favorite movies?”

What Games Increase Chat Activity On Twitch?

There are games specifically designed to increase chat activity such as Words On Stream, Marbles On Stream, Gartic On Stream, and Mods that allow Chat to control the game from chat.

All of these have a component that allow the chat to engage with the game and can be massive to increase activity, and again it also feeds back into my first tip that people will be more active if they see others being active.

If you’re looking for segments you can do in Just chatting that increase activity, and spark conversation then I recommend looking at Tier Lists, Bracket Fights, Buzzfeed quizzes, and one of my favorites Google Feud.

The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Hearing someone say that just because you have a quiet chat when you switch to a game doesn't mean your boring was what I needed to hear today, thank you 🙏
  • @underreign
One night, the chat was going great for me, and my few viewers were chatting with me the whole time. Next stream, averaged 5 viewers the whole time but no chat. Made me think about why but it seems like they enjoyed watching me and just wanted to chill. Great info
  • @Suavetip
I absolutely love your content. Being a small streamer has to be one of the hardest realities when trying to break through. We all appreciate these videos!
  • @Squidumsxo
I'm really glad I stumbled on this video because lately I had started to become discouraged when chat goes quiet. Thanks for explaining how lurkers are on twitch. As a small streamer your content makes a lot of things easier. Thanks so much.
  • @TheMurphination
The "a quiet chat doesn't mean a streamer is boring..." comment resonates TOO well with me, I deal with it all the time! I need to start reminding myself of that because when my chat is dead, my anxiety kicks in and I subconsciously tell myself I'm doing a bad job, whereas my viewers literally tell me "we're just enjoying the vibe and the experience"!
  • @hazefuly
These are actually some great tips for a small content creator. The main focus of Twitch is just that! Chatting with viewers, and playing the game at the same time. Not just ignoring your chat members, because they joined YOUR stream so they'd find someone to talk to about that genre.
  • @kjgibsonmusic
Chat bots and commands are a really great idea! I feel like some of them would work a lot better for smaller streamers than others, but definitely getting some kind of activity in chat is so important since it's impossible to engage with viewers if you don't know they're there
  • @CozyGamerKat
Such an interesting video! I really appreciate your last bit about lurkers and focusing on the game so you can make other content for different platforms. I really value my chatting aspects of my streams, but you're right - if you want to grow, at some point you need to focus more on the content than the relationship between streamer and chat. Probably more relevant for mid-sized streamers than small streamers like myself, but such an interesting point. I'm incredibly curious to see how you navigate this in your stream! As a semi-lurker in your chat it's interesting to see you shift things in small ways, I think you're on the right track, can't wait to see how you'll adapt to more a content-oriented streamer!
  • The best advice anyone's given me in regards to streaming is to treat your stream like a recorded video. Basically learning how to talk to yourself/get comfortable with commentating/laughing at YOURSELF bc that's the content. sometimes you are just performing in front of a camera/mic to a silent audience. and that's ok. I'm only now realising that my habit of doing this off camera really helps now that I'm streaming haha you gotta be just a little wacky to be a streamer after all. I will say I definitely needed to hear that a quiet chat doesn't mean an uninterested chat, especially if people are hanging around just not talking... it means they do enjoy the stream enough to stay. Not everyone wants to put the spotlight on themselves in a chat, and I can understand that. thanks for the pointers man! Great contextual answers with some further insight for common small streamer problems. Much appreciated.
  • I stream with a group, usually we are in Discord. Who ever is running stream that day has chat open on their second screen, and those of us not running the stream do the same. That way all of us can and do respond to chat. When we run our strategy games chat gets hyper active with suggestions or just stuff messing with us for the way we are playing. Next step is getting some emotes and stuff set up for channel points.
  • @clandorangaming
Not gonna lie, as I'm still getting used to even having folks in my chat, I often get too stuck in the game and forget to interact with my chat. I've been working on that and have noticed a difference in how many chatters/followers choose to stay or leave my streams. Really enjoy the advice you give, can't thank you enough.
  • @sweetlylorelei
When it comes to a quiet chat with lots of viewers, it may seem discouraging, but in fact that's not truly the case. I know, right? I think it's a very cool thing. I'd love to know where they come from but chances are they'll be back for more. When chat goes by too fast and you don't acknowledge them enough (if you are genuinely a person who actually cares about others) it becomes pretty difficult because you don't want people to feel left out, but they're there to support you for a reason, and you'd be thankful that they stuck around. It's amazing how sooner or later somebody will come up to you and tell you what they think and what keeps them interested in your streams. Never forget about them. It helps you grow, one tiny step at a time.
  • I truly appreciate your videos man, I seriously need help with engagement in my chat and I need help with my streaming in general. Your videos are super duper helpful and literally anyone who wants to become a streamer should definitely check you out. I truly take your advice into consideration.
  • @Eeowna
I feel like this is why the chant feature IS SO GOOD! I managed to get it and try it out, and a lot of people use the chant as their first message, and after that feel comfortable to talk!
  • Honestly so glad I found this. I’ve been streaming for a bit and this is helping to build a minuscule community. Thank you so much! I’m slowly increasing my viewer count
  • Thank you so much for this. Finally got affiliate and actually have core members that chat that aren’t my real life friends. These are things i’ll focus on to improve my channel and grow a community for my channel to join and have fun. I do have goals to why i wanted to stream and will stick to them. Not gonna take the easy road.
  • @DraluckA
Ever since watching your vids, I've been going around to a ton of different streamers, big and small to see how others handle their chats & content. They dont always do everything said, as different people handle it differently, but ive still seen everything you have said been implemented one way or another. Tldr: You and your vids are amazing, and i cant wait to see what vid you make next.
  • @DezzNytes
I've noticed the final point myself. Sometimes when I'm editing and an important bit comes up that needs to be in a YouTube video it gets cut off by me talking to chat about something completely different or in the past was blown out by some sound alert that I had installed. It's hard to find a good balance between keeping the streams engaging and the YouTube video good quality. I really I hope I'll be able to grow as a creator and as a person in 2022, but sometimes life gets in the way too. It's a tough journey, but I'm positive about it. Thanks for all the help you've given me so far Eljay!
