7 Things I Wish I Knew BEFORE Streaming

While recovering from the sickness that won't be named, I kept thinking about what I know now, that I didn't before going live for the first time. I couldn't help go to the generic advice, like don't use starting soon screens, start a YouTube channel to grow, so I tried my best to ignore those and focus on my personal experience as a Streamer, Twitch Partner, and YouTuber.

For example, how hard it was to be a Creator when I didn't have other Creators Friends, or how hard it is to stream as a job, and the pressure that came from it. These are the things I wish I knew before streaming, to 0 viewers.

How To Grow On Twitch?

If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.

But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!

Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?

The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.

Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up

By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.

If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.

The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Hey #EarlyGang! I've had COVID, and scripted / shot this while still recovering, I just needed to distract myself so It's a bit more off the cuff, hope you enjoy it though! 🕘Timestamps: 0:00 Twitch Advice That I'm Tired Of 0:41 Download The BEST Full Stream Overlays! 1:30 Why Networking Is CRUCIAL, But Not THAT Networking 3:37 Why Spending Time Watching Twitch Helps You Grow 6:03 How To JUDGE Other Creators 8:05 Why Twitch Education Channels Kinda Suck... 9:38 Why Being Repetitive Helps You Grow On Twitch... I think the biggest tip that stuck with me the most from all of your videos is "think of your stream as a show". If you're a small streamer, you can't depend on an active chat to keep going. You can't go quiet if chat is quiet. YOU have to keep your own show going! It's really simple but SO HELPFUL 😌
  • Thank you for another no B.S., no frills, honest, hard truths, reality based video of tips. Some of these "obvious" ideas can easily be forgotten, reminders of them through encouragement is incredibly helpful.
  • One of the best decisions I made with streaming was to be less strict with my schedule, aiming for once a week rather than a specific day. When I tried to have a "specific Stream Day®" I ended up taking it way too seriously and was all like "YEAH THIS IS GONNA BE MY THING I DO WITH MY MUSIC WOO" and I would be really downbeat if it was a quiet or not very chatty stream. Being less strict with it has meant I've rediscovered that streaming is the chill, fun thing I wanted it to be again.
  • When I started streaming in July 2021, I saw pretty immediate growth due simply to the fact that I had been active in so many communities through the pandemic.. just looking to connect with people. When the growth happened, I went hunting youtube for tips on how to approach this in a healthy, optimistic, and successful way. Your videos have been a massive help to me. I made Twitch partner in July of 2022. You have great advice, a lot of which I took to heart, while also staying true to me. Thankyou for your no-nonsense honest approach and wonderful guides. Seriously <3

I'm glad I have streamer friends who told me about lurkers. When someone comments about lurkers in my chat, I snap back about how we love lurkers. I also sometimes don't like what I stream because I don't get a lot of views, but I don't like the big games like Valorant, Overwatch, can't pay for WoW, despise league. I like smaller or older games. Also I am going to stop recording while I stream now.
  • @frogsalesman
I hope everyone in chat calls me a frog, that's the goal

Why do you look EXACTLY like josh allen

Eljay, its STARTLING how much of what you cover in this video has been a topic of conversation within the group chat I have with some content creator homies. We've all been at it for 2+ years now and its totally true, we want to make more cool shit, we want to do stuff that is creatively interesting and has an impact past a livestream. We want our effort to have an impact and maybe take some pressure off of streams so we can enjoy them more. Thanks for always making stuff that seems to resonate with me! Feel better!

When I first started I used follower only mode thinking it would make ppl follow but it was quite the opposite, then I realized I insta leave ppl who have follow only mode on. You have to imagine your self as a viewer. Now I shut off viewer count and just do what I’m gonna do
  • A buddy of mine, who streams extremely infrequently, at odd hours, has a subscribers only chat. I was gonna go and pump him up, help keep chat going, but couldn’t afford to subscribe that month. His numbers are so very low. Now I don’t think I have the charisma to stream, am terrified of being perceived and have dysphoria surrounding my voice, but it sure is still a magnetic idea! I’m doing research for a different buddy who is putting the work in now. If I can’t do my own, I can help a friend’s dream! Thanks for the tips!
  • @PrinceTrexus
The hardest part for me is that I don't have a gaming pc and can't afford one. I have a laptop but it's old and the streams from it are super laggy and bad so I just stream directly from console. But because I do that I can't have all the background music and bells and whistles that make peoples streams usually stand out and look more official. I feel stuck and don't know what to do other than what I'm already doing. It feels like if you don't have a bunch of money you're pretty much screwed which is a feeling I hate
  • @Case-A-Lace
Your videos are great they touch up on so many things I haven't heard before. Thanks so much for the advice.
  • @inz002
A great video as always. I would add my 2 cents into the cup. Throw new ideas at a wall and see what sticks. If something sticks, improve it. If it doesn't stick, improve it! Actually care about what you produce: If you don't want to watch your own streams and youtube videos, it shows.
  • @GamePassDad
Thank you for sharing the info on Shorts, I’m going to give it a try and see if it makes a difference!
  • @Linkister
Great vid thank u soooo much! I began streaming becuse of you ❤😊
  • @relosa_
yes! I ended up taking some breaks from streaming because life and work and the thought of having to grind again wore me down, but I wanted to do the fun part again - streaming! So that's what i'm focusing on now. Just caught up on a couple of your other recent videos (it was my first thought—what's new from eljay about this stuff?) and I'm so relieved that my instincts are paying out! Just getting back into the show, the fun, the chatting, reviewing my streams - then improving them and going from there to generate other content in due time.
  • @treegen2
Nice hook in the beginning. Though it be exactly that, then went above and beyond expectations in the video.👍
  • As always, great video! I need to work a lot more on my YouTube channel... I've only been streaming 5 days a week, and uploading a short here and there.
  • @IlseMulAuthor
Thank you for another insightful video! I can imagine several of these things are valid for YouTube streaming as well, if not everything. Be YOU instead of someone else Learn from others (instead of judging others) Make sure streaming stays fun for you. It will show in the stream :) Having a good balance between streams on one hand and other content on the other is an excellent advice! You have to make sure you don't get a burnout from all the content making & streaming.
