Understanding China's transformation firsthand with David Moser

2024-07-29に共有
Arriving in China more than thirty years ago with nothing more than an interest in Chinese culture and philosophy, David Moser ended up witnessing China's monumental evolution from a country just discovering Coca Cola to a wealthy, worldly, and confident nation. His experiences in China inspired his enthusiasm for cultural exchange, the importance of curiosity, and the necessity of dialogue to grow greater understanding of the country he calls home.

  • Modernization is not necessarily westernization . Don't mix this up .
  • @oyg5341
David is a very rare talent from America work in China for last decades , he is objective and independent in his observations.
  • When you learn the Chinese language, you learn Chinese vocabulary, expressions, and concepts, which come from their classics. In this way, you will naturally learn Chinese culture, values, wisdom and the Chinese way of thinking. I often feel that the Chinese people are very lucky because their language makes them a wise, collectivist, harmonious, cooperative, moderate, and moral people.
  • China is more unified than many western countries. Diverse but not unpunished. All 56nethnic groups are allowed to keep their custom and dialectsl. A better life is priority for everyone. isn't it ? Who wants poverty and foreign interference?
  • Rational and reasonable people like him are so rare these days.
  • I wish him and many rational, intelligent people could take command of the country instead of the current candidates.
  • Visited China several times over 20 years, and all i see and experience is progress. I wish my country could do the same. Kudos to China 🇨🇳
  • This man knows China, he truly understands the enormous complexity and diversity of China. Few people can catch this feature of China.
  • Success was not served on a Silver Platter but thru hard work, dedication, sacrifice, unity, educationd, zero corruptions and Government-People cooperations.
  • No wonder it is different, as ot is based pn Taoist, Buddhist and Confucianism principles, which are much older concepts . Chinese will be stronger onowing and living by these principles, not copying the West, as these are better for the well being of the humanity.
  • Going back to China for the 11th time later this year. It's always a lot of fun and my videos show this. Having friends and relatives in China is much different than being a tourist. Living full time in China is something I could do but probably will not because there are too many responsibilities in the States.
  • We have modernised but certainly not westernised.
  • This Youtube video presents the heart felt and truly sincere views of an academic, with deep love and appreciation of the Chinese culture and language of over 38 years of immersion inside China, wishing more of his fellow Americans would become more acquainted and familiar with China. Unfortunately the mainstream media follows the predominantly official US government view of China as a threat and have been constructing walls and obstacles along the paths of communicating and understanding between the American and Chinese people. I wonder how many Americans will actually see this Youtube video. Perhaps China's recent 144 hours visiting China without needing a visa would actually generate more interest from the western countries of visiting China and becoming more interested in China once they realize that how far astray they have been led to believe about China by the mainstream media. Thanks for sharing this video and best wishes to Mr David Moser.
  • I am pretty sure you understand the Chinese deep enough, since you understand the phrase 韬光养晦。
  • Only westerners will imagine that China has a monolithic, homogeneous culture. No, the CPC never pushed that line. Educated Chinese understood that their country is one of the most diverse and multicultural in the world. They only have to talk to another Chinese from a different region and be reminded, if they needed to be reminded, that even the Chinese language is highly diverse. So don't know whers you got the idea that the CPC had tried to present a homogeneous culture. Yes, it did push unity, but unity in diversity. Just watch a Spring Festival Gala which has the backing of the government. The variety there is astounding rven without the contributions from places like Africa.
  • The observation he shared regarding China has a completely different paradigm of and set of value relating to human/society/governance/etc. is very important, most Western countries are not aware that there are different possibilities of mankind, but addicted to a zero-sum game. Two comments: 1. when you praise/compliment a Chinese, he/she says nonononono, I am this or that not good, this is not sense of inferiority, but modesty required by Chinese culture; 2. CN gov never presents to the world that CN has only one voice/thought, diversity and differences between regions/ethnicities culturally, economically and politically are always acknowledged. There is great tolerance in China towards diversities (co-existing with the fact that it is an almost homogenous society w/ 92+% Han--the tolerance might be due to the long term co-existence and co-mingling of different races/origins/regions, the basic bottom line is you can do whatever, so long as you don't bother others.) The Western MSMs/thinktanks try very hard to depict China as a country having no freedom, particularly, no freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc., which are myths. If you go to any Chinese social media or wechat group, you'll see the diverse political views, criticism, insults of or even attacks on CN gov, views different from the official stances, but they won't be bothered at all unless certain redlines are crossed, typically relating to stability/social unrest/etc. Religions are freely practiced but they are not allowed to be used to organize crimes/incite social unrest or being used to interfere with Chinese internal affairs by external forces, religious groups are required to register according to law, also you are not allowed to preach to/convert minors (terrorist attacks in China in the past 30 years were always associated with people funded/directed by external forces), all adults can practice their religions openly/freely/lawfully. David's suggestion is valuable, i.e., have more ppl go over to get to know China (even from your treating China as a threat perspective)--if you know China well, you'd understand Chinese are inner focused, they don't like to expand territories to take on others' problems, they don't like wars let alone starting wars. So the Western accusations of China becoming a hegemon/trying to dominate etc. are pretty much BS. Chinese like to be left in peace, work hard and make money... Also the allegation that Chinese don't have values is false. If there is any value that is universal, this should be it: "don't do unto others what you don't want done to you" --all the rest is imposition of one group's value upon others. May there be understanding, mutual respect, equality, integrity of sovereignty and peaceful co-existence, may there be common development and common wealth for the mankind.
  • Gradually the West will begin to understand the extraordinary dynamics of the hugely diversified population of the Middle Kingdom !
  • @momo0370
people and culture is not the question or point, but the system in control.
  • @dav5253
Mr. Moser is not wrong when he said Chinese people don't have one single view all together. Chinese people do have many different opinions about many things. But, pay attention, Chinese people will come together very quickly to achieve a common goal focusing like no other nation can. And that's why China has achieved such shocking modernization and industrialization so quickly in human history.
  • The government is not concerned of visitors see/feel Chinese culture, they are afraid of seeing the ugly side of the government!
