Sorry , no airplanes this time ! I could not resist and filmed this little wonder during my visit to one of Kent's top tourist attractions! It is Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

The The railway was the dream of millionaire racing drivers Captain John Edwards Presgrave ("Jack") Howey and Count Louis Zborowski. The RH&DR has been drawing crowds since it opened in 1927 and now operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. These small but perfectly-formed trains, take just over an hour to complete the full journey from Hythe to Dungeness but there are opportunities to get off and explore along the way too. The natural starting place for a journey on the RH&DR is at its station in the historic and pretty town of Hythe. It’s one of six along the track, which stretches 13 miles across the picturesque Romney Marsh to Dungeness, one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world, a place of other-worldly beauty and a designated National Nature Reserve.

The fleet of ten original steam locomotives remain in service, each covering up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) a year. The RH&DR is still the only user of the 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive in the UK, with No 6 Samson and No 5 Hercules in regular service.
With several stations in between, all within walking distance of the beautiful Kent coastline, the railway gives passengers an opportunity to explore this unique corner of Kent. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic lighthouses are all on your doorstep.

Great to see that this childhood-memory of mine is still running, sixty years on !

It's cool that this is a real commercial railroad that hauls revenue freight and passengers, and not a miniature scale railroad.

Просто супер! Всю жизнь отдал железным дорогам. Строил БАМ. Молодцы, других слов нет!
  • "The Paris Agreement is clear - no more coal!" picture of Southern Maid "Okay I will make an exception but only because she looks very polite"
  • It gets even more awesome at the other end of the line. Most of it is double tracked and Hythe has a turntable and loco shed. As well as the six Pacific's loosely modelled on LNER prototypes there are two Canadian outline locos that are very impressive. The pulling power of these small locos pulling these long trains on a 26 mile round trip is also impressive although helped by the fact that the country is as flat as a pancake so no gradients stop
  • I've been here before! This is the RH&DR, Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway~ My family and I are from the US and went to stay with a friend in the UK in 2011. We actually rode on the first engine in the video, "Southern Maid", and it was a blast! I really hope we can go back one day. Both me and my mom are in wheelchairs, and I was super impressed even this small railway managed to stay wheelchair accessible. The food at one of the stations on the line was to DIE for! Awesome scenery on a gorgeous loco. What more could you ask for! There was also a model railway museum on the line too!
  • What a beautiful train!!! I hope that it continues this legacy for ever. ❤

This has to be one of the coolest things I've seen in along time. I just loved it!
  • What super cool video 👍 I was not aware of this small train. Must be a popular place to visit. Thanks for the great information too. It would be worth a visit to go on a train ride, walk through the beautiful landscape and enjoy all those picterosque places.

My first encounter with the RHDR dates back to 1968 ... Good to see that some things apparently stay themselves.
  • amazing video mate, that's a dream for railway lovers, one time I had a ride in a similar one in Switzerland :)
