A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.

Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a new American musical about life and the way we live it.

this song: exists animators with social anxiety: it’s free real estate

Just in case anyone was wondering, this is the best song to have a mental breakdown to while folding laundry
  • This is why Broadway must never die. Songs like these just fill you with so much emotion and I hope everyone gets to feel all those feelings

“What does anxiety feel like?” Me: aggressively points
  • “Step out, step out of the sun” “If you keep getting burned” This line is my single favorite line in songwriting. A beautiful analogy that exactly represents anxiety. The sun, being the spotlight, is referring to being seen, to putting yourself out there. But what happens when no one responds to what you say, or when you find yourself in an awkward conversation, suddenly empty on words, struggling. There’s a point in time, after failing so much, you just never risk standing in the sun again. For why step into the sun if you keep getting burned?
  • I've learned to slam on the brake Before I even turn the key Before I make the mistake Before I lead with the worst of me Give them no reason to stare No slipping up if you slip away So I got nothing to share No, I got nothing to say Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass I'm waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass I'm waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? We start with stars in our eyes We start believing that we belong But every sun doesn't rise And no one tells you where you went wrong Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? It's like I never made a sound Will I ever make a sound? On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? (oh) Is anybody waving? Waving, waving, whoa-oh, whoa-oh

If you listen very closely, you can hear me singing along, and sobbing.

Everyone has a happy ending, if your not happy, it's not the end. (I found this in a Dove Chocolate wrapper.)

I haven't had it as hard as Evan, but the first time I listened to this musical, I sobbed. I've never had suicidal tendencies, but I have suffered from anxiety my entire life. I've experienced the crippling loneliness that feels like no one would notice if you vanished into thin air. When I heard this, I couldn't believe it. I felt so seen. And it helped me realize I matter just as much as everyone else. Thank you, Dear Evan Hansen.

as someone with social anxiety, this song… really hits close to home.

People who are naturally like quiet and introverted often have the most interesting things to say. Remember that next time you don't feel like speaking up.
  • While I was in a mental hospital, I made a friend with a boy who loved DEH. He helped me write a song there. I just watched the movie and was reminded of him. I feel so connected to Evan and realize how far I’ve come. I’m so thankful for these art forms that make people feel heard and seen.
