Me while listening: "Dang this sounds a lot like Idina Menzel" Sees description: "Oh"

Did you know Wicked struggled when it first opened on Broadway? Great musicals will always defy and rise above.
  • Her words "well if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost" hit me so hard. I freaking love this song.
  • @deboisblanc
Saw this on Broadway two years ago with four of our grandkids. Pure magic.

The weight that this musical carries will never be matched, PERIOD. And let’s not even mention the cast 🔥

Saw this on Broadway and it was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced. This part especially.

Elphaba, why couldn't you have stayed calm, for once instead of flying off the handle? I hope you're happy I hope you're happy now I hope you're happy how you've hurt your cause forever I hope you think you're clever I hope you're happy I hope you're happy too I hope you're proud how you would Grovel in submission To feed your own ambition So though I can't imagine how I hope you're happy right now Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry! You can still be with The Wizard What you've worked and waited for You can have all you ever wanted I know But I don't want it No. I can't want it anymore... Something has changed within me Something is not the same I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep It's time to trust my instincts Close my eyes and leap It's time to try defying gravity I think I'll try defying gravity And you can't pull me down Can't I make you understand You're having delusions of grandeur? I'm through accepting limits 'Cause someone says they're so Some things I cannot change But 'til I try I'll never know Too long I've been afraid of Losing love, I guess I've lost Well if that's love It comes at much too high a cost I'd sooner buy defying gravity Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity And you can't pull me down! Glinda, come with me. Think of what we could do together! Unlimited Together we're unlimited Together we'll be the greatest team There's ever been, Glinda! Dreams the way we planned 'em If we work in tandem There's no fight we cannot win Just you and I defying gravity With you and I defying gravity They'll never bring us down! Well, are you coming? I hope you're happy now that you're choosing this You too I hope it brings you bliss I really hope you get it And you don't live to regret it I hope you're happy in the end I hope you're happy my friend So if you care to find me Look to the Western sky! As someone told me lately Everyone deserves the chance to fly And if I'm flying solo At least I'm flying free To those who ground me Take a message back from me! Tell them how I am defying gravity I'm flying high defying gravity And soon I'll match them in renown And nobody in all of Oz No wizard that there is or was Is ever gonna bring me down! I hope you're happy [Ensemble] Look at her She's wicked Get her! Bring me down! [Ensemble] No one mourns the wicked So we got to bring her down!

4:27 Let's face it. Whenever this ending part plays and when Elphaba belts "IT'S MEEEEE!!!!!! So if you care to find me!" and all that stuff, everyone in the audience flat-out gives the act-one finale a standing ovation with thunderous applause and them cheering their heads off. I imagine the song will be even more unbelievable when the movie comes out. Also, if the Tony's presented an award for Best Song in a Musical, I'm pretty sure Defying Gravity would be the winner in that time period. Am I right?

Idk why but the part where they sing to each other “I hope you’re happy in the end” it brings power and it brings tears to my eyes this song is absolutely powerful to my emotions and I hope to sing it like this someday

  • so when i first preformed this show i thought i could sing this song, but on opening night i had my director record it. so when i saw him again he played it....and to i stared crying because i was actually proud of myself for once.
  • I love how this song has basically the same meaning as “Let It Go” and they’re both sung by Idina Menzel.
  • I could easily see Disney making an Animated Adaptation of this for a movie. I actually want it now lol 😂😂
  • @SamK31
4:33 is where the BEST part of the song starts.

Glinda's voice when she sings "I hope you're happy, Now that you're choosing this" is so heartbreaking. You can hear how much she loves Elphaba but still can't bring herself to give up what she built, and just how broken she is by it. Which is fittingly followed by her reassuring Elphaba that she loves her and wants her to be happy. Even when the people of Oz start calling her wicked Glinda still says "I hope you're happy". Which sounds condescending but really is a genuine statement.
