Traumatic content such as hate speech, porn and brutal violence are just some of the topics this Facebook content moderator was faced with on a daily basis. We hear from a man who explains how Facebook moderating finally took a toll on his mental health.

During his time at Facebook, he had to make complex moral decisions in mere seconds and only after he left the company, did he realize how profoundly it had impacted him - when he was diagnosed with PTSD. He now has a lawsuit pending against Facebook for the treatment.

Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people in positions of power on the inside of important institutions.

Can I just say 'Thank you'? You did a thankless job, and it is really important to the good of the public you protect from seeing these horrific things. I could not do what you had to do.
  • @Aznprada
Thank you for coming forward. The world needs to know.
  • @Gotsui
These people NEED free psychological help. This is abuse.

Hats off to these moderators who do such traumatic job. I wonder how Facebook continue to keep humans who are prone to get traumatized with such graphic content. As he said Mark Zuckerberg is not even bothered with these employees as long as his Facebook continues to add wealth in his net worth. 😒

This is what Image AI should be used for. To save people from these traumas.
  • everything this person said is true. I used to work as moderator for nearly a year, everyday it felt like torture of expectation. what kind of imagery would come up next? what kind of bully that occurred online? the constant worry of making mistakes as moderator triggered a lot of my anxiety, I lost a lot of weight. the first few months were torture to me, I couldn't function like normal person. things got easier, but damn the content you saw really affected you at times.

I thought they have an AI system that will detect something like that but it turns out it was manual all the time. Man, the amount of moderators that suffered from PTSD. Worse cruel management

Those reminds me of the Internet in the early-to-mid-2000s where on a forum(even a generally tame one) or anything similar, people would post abhorrent things and edgy teenagers would feel “cool” and “mature” for looking at remarkably obscene or graphic stuff, even though it churned their (our, let’s be honest) stomachs deep down. It’s crazy to think it all still happens.

I erase my FB account long time ago, it was disturbing me in so many ways. My life has become way better after that.

My heart goes out to you and all of your fellow moderators. I know I would have great difficulty doing your job. There are some very disturbed people out there that you have to see. God bless you. Also, you are not informers. Your job is necessary.

I remembered like 15 years ago, FB not very well moderated, and some of the very disturbing video had been leaked out, those videos are so terrifying, I still remember til these days.
