This former flight attendant reveals what it’s like flying for both low-cost and premium airlines in Asia, “I’ve seen a lot of flight attendants spiral, there’s a lot of suicide in the industry."

The only KPI that matters is your appearance, so if you have bad skin or gain weight then you’re suspended to fix those issues before stepping back onto the plane. She’s seen flight attendants resort to drug use and plastic surgery — with a colleague dying on the surgery table from getting liposuction.

She’s dealt with a passenger throwing hot noodle soup at crew members, an intoxicated passenger masturbating naked in his seat, a suspected Mafia member smuggling guns onto the plane to the pressures of entertaining high-level politicians whilst the airline is turning a blind eye.

All those years as a flight attendant have changed the way the Informer perceives society, she says “it’s great when you start, you’re being paid thousands to travel to all these exotic places but I just did not foresee this other side of the industry”.

We need someone from the music industry, the world will be shocked

I love this series. It's practically undoing the social media effect, unglamorising all these overly hyped up jobs. Excellent work, team VICE.

I applied to be a flight attendant back in the early 2000s. They told me in the interview that maintaining a very small weight is a part of the job description because the flight attendants have to be tiny to fit down the halls. A couple of friends of mine who were flight attendants talked me out of it because they said they were always expected to sleep with the pilots. This was in the US.

"the pay isnt worth all of the struggles i had to endure" That brought me to tears. This world is so sick. i pray you find some healing.

My sister was a flight attendant and she even went to school for it. My cousin told me a lot of people hated her including co-workers just cuz she didn't need surgery to improve her looks, her body, didn't drink alcohol or use drugs. She eventually went back to school and became a Surgical Technician and resigned as a Flight Attendant.
  • this series taught me that every line of work just sucks, is emotionally and mentally draining, and you shouldn't do it.

I remember a flight attendant that pulled down the window blinds for me when I was sleeping. I was a quiet, shy teenager, usually invisible to people, and it melted my heart because it was so nice and I never asked for it. Later when I woke up I got hot buns for a flight breakfast and I loved them so much I remember them all those years later. It breaks my heart to learn how awfully those people are treated. For how nice they have always been to me, I would love to give them all the good things in this world, but they get all the bad things and it's not fair, it's so much not fair.... They don't deserve that!

I applied for the flight attendant position recently and I read the website carefully and checked all the requirements. I seemed to be a very good candidate so I thought I would easily get the job. I passed all the exams and the last thing to do was weight, height measurements. I was underweight so they immediately eliminated me, even though they never wrote on their website specifically about that. I had to travel, buy plane tickets and all that just to get eliminated because of weighing 6 kilos less. I was super sad and I thought I lost a huge opportunity but now I can see that I was actually saved from that madness.
  • I've only flown a couple times, but when I was a young boy, I had to fly to visit my father all by myself, because my brother threw a fit and wouldn't go. I remember a very nice female flight attendant personally looking out for me, which I am grateful for fifty some years later.

I worked as a flight attendant in Northern Europe and it wasn't like this. Any harassment or misbehaviour of customers, and we would give them a warning and have the guards waiting for them at the arrival gate. No hard beauty standards either, we had all sizes of both women and men. The negative things I witnessed was some unruly customers, gossip and power games by seniors. Then the constant pressure change in the body and short nights really messes up your body. Many were on sleeping pills. And garlic, you can't eat any of that...

Good to see you're continuing with the Informer series of videos. It's one of the best things VICE have done. I was starting to think you might've brought it to an end due to the length of time since the last video.
  • @kekekong9
Please continue to do this series!! I love how raw and unfiltered it is. I learn a lot.
  • This should be a wakeup call to all airline companies. A job should be something you are passionate about and not a prison.
  • @Mr_Jingles111
The traumas that she went through are unimaginable. I hope she gets well.
  • @BasileusRex
I work in the aviation industry and without getting into detail, I deal with crew members every day. Some of them are nice, but others also have some of the most entitled attitudes you've ever seen. This really gives some much needed context for that.
  • About being prostituted, it's not just in airlines industry. Happens a lot in entertainment industry and even other sectors like corporate settings. I am an engineer myself and I know a colleague who was forced to cater her project manager for a night after she did a miscalculation in her work. She accepted it out of fear because the miscalculation she did could cost a hefty sum. Well, the project manager only ordered some adjustments in procurement team and viola, it was solved. Turns out, he could easily solve it but used the situation to fulfill his desire. It's a brutal world out there, watch out for your sister, wife, and daughter.
  • @iMerlin..
I sat next to a British Airlines pilot on one of my flights and I said “I’d love to be an air hostess!” And he said “Nahhh, be a pilot!” and gave me a look of concern.. I think that was a warning from him.

I worked for 2 years and 8 months on super yachts for million and billionaires. Me and my head chef watched first hand as rich people commited horrid crimes and when my head chef attempted to report it to the Monaco Port Authority he was arrested on bogus charges then sued for “breach of contract”. Then he was black listed from finding work on boats or on shore. I even tried to quietly report some of the things I witnessed just to have my old employer to call and threaten me and my career less than an hour later. Serving rich people is a horror film.
