STEP 1
We admitted we were
powerless over alcohol - that
our lives had become
unmanageable.

STEP 2
Came to believe that a Power
greater than ourselves could
restore us to sanity

STEP 3
Made a decision to turn our
will and our lives over to the
care of God as we understood
Him.

STEP 4
Made a searching and fearless
moral inventory of ourselves.

STEP 5
Admitted to God, to ourselves,
and to another human being
the exact nature of our wrongs.

STEP 6
Were entirely ready to have
God remove all these defects
of character.

STEP 7
Humbly asked Him to remove
our shortcomings.

STEP 8
Made a list of all persons we
had harmed, and became
willing to make amends to
them all.

STEP 9
Made direct amends to such
people wherever possible,
except when to do so would
injure them or others.

STEP 10
Continued to take personal
inventory and when we were
wrong promptly admitted it.

STEP 11
Sought through prayer and
meditation to improve our
conscious contact with God as
we understood Him, praying
only for knowledge of
His will for us and the power
to carry that out.

STEP 12
Having had a spiritual
awakening as the result of
these steps, we tried to
carry this message to
alcoholics, and to practice
these principles in all
our affairs.

I truly believe this man was inspired or chosen in some way. He was just a man and as flawed and nasty as the rest of us. And he has been gone for a long time. But what he did, what he wrote, what he established has saved life after life including (hopefully) my own.
  • maybe our compassionate Higher 💌 Power reached hopeless drunks like me, Through flawed Dr. BOB & BILL.

FYI. I am planning a retreat paralleling the spirituality of Centering Prayer and 12 Steps.

He took two Ideals #1 The Oxford Group ; they wanted to sober up Alcoholics through a 5 step process. But it never really took off because it was Christian based and alcoholics did not like GOD cramming down their throats; hence the AA dogma “GOD as you understand GOD” He took the 5 Steps of the Oxford group and added the first step making it 6 steps then he is quoted as saying “ if twelve apostles were good for HIM 12 steps will be good for us” and he basically took the 6 step’s and made them 12 steps. For instance, steps 10 & 11 are basically the 5th step of the original 6 steps. #2 The Washingtonian Temperament Society: 6 alcoholics came together by staying sober talking about their experiences, strength and hope and total abstinence. Over time they became 600,000 strong but over time fell off do to differences in their primary purpose. Hence the reason bill and the others created the 12 Traditions so that AA over time would survive ❤
