Grace VanderWaal performed her second original song to be premiered during the 2019 "Ur So Beautiful" tour in the Cannery Ballroom in Nashville on Aug 13. The title of the song is "The City", and it digs deep in the topic of jealousy.

The lyrics presented in this video were interpreted in a team effort on the VanderVault forum:
www.vandervault.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=475
and in various threads on YouTube.
I have no doubts that as soon as I have posted this video better interpretations will be posted. Nothing like posting a wrong answer to the internet to solicit the correct one...

Source material was John Mann's video of the premiere for the visuals, and Kelly's (breakingdownthewall) excellent audio from El Rey in LA on Aug 28. Links below.

That's my take on the lyrics : [Verse 1] Go through the day But I'll be checking on my phone To see if you called You didn't call One of the boys I'll be chill, I'll keep my cool But don't play me for the fool Don't be so cruel Cause I can fake it that I'm happy But this time you can see You try to make a good memory Cause you like my jealousy But you're... [Pre-Chorus] In the city When you should be here with me I know I might be boring But I'm not one for pity So have a ball At the Whitney with your friends All so pretty I know I'm being dramatic So I'll go and wish you [Chorus] Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh (ah, ah, ah) [Verse 2] Time passes slow And I've called everyone I know But the more that people come over I realize I'm getting worse and I wanna stay alone Close down my phone I've been on it so much my eyes hurt And the outside is getting darker I'm tired and it's getting harder and harder to Fake it that I'm truly happy (ha-a-ppy) And all my friends can see You try to make a good memory (memory) But it's hard when it's not with me Cause you're... [Pre-Chorus] In the city When you should be here with me I know I might be boring But I'm not one for pity So have a ball At the Whitney with your friends All so pretty I know I'm being dramatic So I'll go and wish you [Chorus] Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh Have fun in the city oh, oh, oh Have fun Go, have fun Have fu-u-un! Oh, oh, oh Have fun in the... Have fun in the... Have fu-u-un!
  • She is special, to hear her sing, is to take a trip revealing the veil of this vast darkness in this musical universe colored by the brightness of this star, running through each beautiful and well crafted melody, she is amazing, congratulations and "success" always !!!

I agree with Richard's comment... Grace seriously gets better and better all the time. I've never witnessed anything like this. Truly amazing! 💖 Much LOVE ❤️💔💕

Grace, you just get better and better with every song you write and sing.
  • @Pelodeni
With the lyrics, the mood I get is way more emotional with this song. Way to go.
  • Thanks for sharing this video Grace is always a princess with a spectacular voice and unmatched talent, congratulations and "success always" !!!

Thank you very much for the lyrics. I thought I got at least the gist of the song after listening to its first manifestation here on YT. But I got it wrong. There's a note now on my desk: don't use crappy in-ear headphones for new songs (e.g. for Waste My Time); don't try to construct a picture if there's just not enough information available.

appreciate the effort everyone...part of the fun of following gv is parsing lyrics of her unreleased songs. kinda like uncovering gold nuggets or diamonds

Knowing the lyrics adds tons to the song. Why are we having such a hard time hearing what she's singing about? Is it all the inability of cellphones to capture her voice? This tour is bringing home how much in the dark we are.
  • @oscresson
Thanks for this. Her lyrics are always fun. Notice how much is added with "the Whitney", that's the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC. It fixes the city where the song takes place, as well as what she is being left out of by the "all so pretty" friends, not the usual night out on the town. That's a lot added with two words.

First time I've actually known what the lyrics to the song are, though I loved it before I knew. But, Grace hasn't been dating very long; where on earth does she get the inspiration for this brilliant song?
  • Fillmore I thought had decent sound levels. I do notice that I am so caught up with Grace's emotive gestures while singing 'free form dancing' that it is hard to comprehend the newer lyrics at the same time. (The ones I didn't have completely memorized.) I know everybody says this; I thought Fillmore was just a perfect performance with some of the best audience participation yet!

Everytime you hear her you don't know if you should dance or contemplate the lyrics

Hey, HP! Great video! It is so hard to hear the words to these new songs that are recorded on cell phones. I listened closely with earbuds and read along to your creation. The only questionable lyric I can hear is, "...and all my friends can see." To me it sounds like, "... I hope my friends can see." But I'm on a laptop with not so great earbuds. But see, (or hear), what you think.
