Sarah Carey is the editor of Everyday Food magazine and her job is to come up with the best ways to make fast, delicious food at home. But she's also a mom to two hungry kids, so the question "What's for dinner?" is never far from her mind -- or theirs, it seems! Her days can get crazy busy (whose don't?), so these videos are all about her favorite fast, fresh meals -- and the tricks she uses to make it all SO much easier.

I’m always looking for veggie side dishes, this one checks all the boxes and that color is nice.

I make this dish on a regular basis! A couple thoughts. First, I recommend using a mandolin with the thinnest blade setting. The end texture is by far the best. Even when I do my best to make uniform angel hair ribbons with a chef’s knife, they just can’t quite match the texture I get from the mandolin. Second, I do recommend the addition of a pinch of clove, a pinch of caraway, and a pinch of celery seed. Go easy on all three, but you’ll be happy you added them. Finally, I add a knob of butter at the very end.
  • I have had a red cabbage sitting in my fridge wondering how to cook it, now I will make this tonite for dinner. Thanks Sarah.
  • I’ve made braised red cabbage a number of times but thought I’d seek out a new recipe to try. Just made this, following to a tee, and it rocks! Great balance of flavors and my wife is going to love the apples! Smothered pork chops and white rice with this cabbage for dinner tonight. Great recipe!
  • Saw the video this afternoon and made the dish this evening. Easy prep and a delicious side dish! Thank-you for posting the video.

Yum! I grew up with this but have never made it. Definitely going to try it!
  • I saw this recipe without covering and steaming the cabbage and it retained the color a lot better but with constant stirring. I think this is very practical.
