Is it futile to resist China’s superpower status? Is it time for the United States to live with it?

Depending on the answer, the world could be heading towards more stability – or chaos.

Kishore Mahbubani was a Singaporean diplomat for more than 30 years and served as president of the United Nations Security Council. He tells host Steve Clemons that the US should get accustomed to a multipolar world it can no longer dominate.

Mahbubani argues that the "Asian century" has already begun and that Washington should not allow issues such as Taiwan to ruin their relations.

Question is, can US contain and control itself, insted of making trouble everywhere?

The world is not for any one country to contain another country. It’s an absurd and utterly selfish concept of winner wins all. Losers plan containment but true winners talk about competition and cooperation.

Chinese always have a saying “harmony bring wealth”, compare to USA “my way or the high way”. This is a fundamental different between these 2 countries, and it leads to a very different foreign policy for these 2 countries.

China is playing civilization while the U.S. is playing call of duty.😐
  • It is interesting why American's media talk like a judge of other countries. No other countries talk about how US should behave.
  • The U.S. has also invaded or bombed dozens of countries and supported nearly every single right-wing dictatorship in the world since the end of World War II. It has overthrown or attempted to overthrow dozens of foreign governments since 1949 and has actively sought to crush nearly every single people’s liberation movement over that same period. It has also meddled in scores of elections, in countries that are allies and adversaries alike. Forcing other countries to “adopt there so called American values .”

"China is going to be with us for the next 1000 years'' - LOVE IT !!!

BRICS wants to build a new currency. It is also worth noting that gold has historically been used as a store of value and a means of exchange, and some countries still hold significant amounts of gold in their reserves. However, it is unclear how a new currency backed by gold would function in the current global financial system and whether it would gain widespread acceptance. Ultimately, any decision to create a new currency would be subiect to numerous economic, political, and logistical considerations.

Missing the big picture. USA is not a democracy it's a corporate autocracy ruled by the big corporates. Global interests are not about good will between people rather about where profits are to be made.
  • @eng80425
Why should one country even be allowed to contain another? Such a country is just as evil if not worse than what they accuse others to be.
  • @Raymondjohn2
BRICS seeks to create a new currency, considering gold's historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange. However, the functionality and acceptance of a gold-backed currency in the current global financial system are uncertain. Creating a new currency requires careful consideration of economic, political, and logistical factors.

Now American problem is they lost industrial base, and they have nothing to trade except weapons and overprinted money. I'm glad i had liquidated most of my major assets on the financial market at premium price before i call bad investment! The problem with the US economy today is that they underestimated China. Also, i agree with peter from the comments that the world is not for anyone to contain.
  • @kinchau4764
They underestimated China, and overestimated themselves… it’s a new world, wake up.
  • @waichui2988
It was possible to contain the Soviet Union because they contained themselves. They did not let foreigners in. They did not come out to the world to interact and trade. If they came out, they themselves said that the ultimate purpose was to change your country into communist and thus nobody trusted them. China is now the number one trading partner for 140 countries in the world. That trade benefits both sides. China now invests heavily in many countries in the world and that benefits the countries receiving the investments. China does not have a globalized ideology and does not try to tell other countries how to run their own affairs, making China a more attractive partner than the US. Why should any country cut their ties with China to please the US? Is the US offering to compensate those countries for their losses if they were to do so? The idea of "containing China" is a hallucination.
  • for a long time, every time we talk about US foreign policy, it is always about war war war or conflict conflict conflict, who is not tired of it?
  • @ilyshp2188
This is absurd! What on earth gives America the right to contain any country in the world. It's a shame to the American.
  • Its great listening to Dr Kishore Mahubani.. such a knowledgable person explaining current matters calmly and eloquently 👍👏👏

I have only been in China for one year, but during this year, I did not see a homeless person. China really feels like the future.most of people in the west can't even tell where Asia is , let alone the difference between Asian countries.A big challenge ahead but I hope you will succeed. But honestly, seeing is believing. China needs to be seen to find the truth that has been telling us all along. This speaks to the safety and honesty of people in China.China has even more people than US. Not to mention, minimal violent crime, strict drug laws and a law biding society. We all have a lot to learn from China!

Only weak empires try to contain others, but always fail
