Georgia's next election will be referendum for or against Europe: President Zourabichvili

Published 2024-05-03
Georgia has erupted in protest once again, as the ruling Georgian Dream party pursues a "foreign agents" bill in parliament – something that has left a question mark hanging over the country’s European ambitions. The EU granted the ex-Soviet nation candidate status to join the bloc last December. We speak to Georgia's President Salomé Zourabichvili, who plans to veto the final draft of the law, but admits that parliament can still override her veto. That makes the October 26 election even more crucial for re-asserting the country’s European path, she says.

We wish the Georgian people all the best! This is exactly how it went down in Malta 2003.. We had a referendum too and a general election that decided between either the pro EU party or the party that wanted to cancel our membership.. The EU has been the best thing for Malta! Even the party who wanted to cancel the membership now admits that. Being so small and isolated we have flourished in the EU. If we hadn't joined, it would have been a disaster for our country. We would have ended up in a very bad place. I would have had to find a way to leave my country or i would have ended up ending my life.

They have elections coming up in 5 months - so how come the ruling party is behaving so against the public interest rather than appeasing them in this period?? 🤔

Bring in Georgia into EU and NATO now before the we get another Ukraine scenario.
  • Why should the finances of the NGO sector not be transparent if they actively interfere in the political life of the country. What's wrong with that? If the Georgians see what the NGO sector's money is being spent on, will Russia's business be done with it? If the problem is the name of the law, protest it. But you are against the transparency

Seems like Putin is trying to hold on to the Caucuses. EU and US needs to take serious on giving a helping hand to those countries in the Caucuses that are interested in joining the West, before it is too late. Them being indifference is powering Putin backed people in those countries.

10:55 Saakashvili deserves a political "Oscar" for playing ill. It turned out that at that very time when corrupt European MPs were spreading lies about Misha being poisoned, he impregnated one of his paramours. "On the deathbed" Misha-style.

Dear President Zourabishvili, we wish you and the Georgian people victory. Our best wishes and brotherly support from a group Armenians in USA. Our dream is - Georgia and Armenia in EU
  • stay neutral and not become the puppy of the USA by NGOs and CIA may be a good position for small country.

Why on earth would Georgia with very little common with European in terms of culture , history and economics would so desperately want to be like Europe… to be a part of it ? Sure everyone is free to choose its own friends but if all variables taken into account such a desperate desire raises too many questions . And btw - US has foreign agents law as well, but strangely everyone is silent about that fact
  • @mattboyer3385
Doesn't the fact that European media is so critical of a foreign influence law prove the need for such a law in the first place?
  • @happymelon7129
Georgia has the rights to defend/protect itself. Georgia copy the law of European Union country and the United States. 😅But the European Union country and the United States criticize Georgia ? evi1 ...
  • @happymelon7129
U$A has the same law , but its policy is like ... "Itself can install lock for its house , but Georgia cannot install lock to prevent/protect/defend from U$A meddling "
