Why Israel is in deep trouble: John Mearsheimer with Tom Switzer

Published 2024-05-17
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on 29 September 2023 that “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.” That all changed on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, which unsurprisingly invaded Gaza to destroy Hamas.

After more than six months, it appears to many that Israel is losing its war in Gaza. At the same time, Israel is fighting Hezbollah on its northern border, relations between Jerusalem and Washington are strained, and the International Court of Justice has ruled that a plausible case can be made that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

Meanwhile, there is great danger of escalation across the region, as the fighting between Israel and Iran makes clear. Indeed, there is a possibility the United States, which is already fighting the Houthis, might end up in a war with Iran, which neither country wants.

What might be the lasting consequences of these conflicts? Who will emerge weaker and who stronger? And what does this crisis mean for U.S. foreign policy in the region, Ukraine and East Asia?

Next in our Greater Middle East Debate Series, Bret Stephens will be taking a very different stance on the Israel and Palestinian conflict on 18 June in Sydney and 20 June in Melbourne. Get your tickets: www.cis.org.au/event/bret-stephens-2024/

Israel is such a waste of my taxes. They should stand alone.

  • Even in my thirties, I am having my faith in America undermined in ways I didn't realize I had still trusted.

I wonder how many people in the audience didn't like to hear what he had to say.

I remember John arguing in 2004 that the winner of the war in Iraq will be Iran not U.S. and everybody laughed at him.

It’s hard for the Americans to admit that AIPAC is ruling the country on both domestic and foreign policy.

This speaker is so based. He actually changes his opinion and makes it public, unlike every world leader who says one thing, realizes it was a mistake/wrong decision, and is too cowardly to to change their opinion. Thid man deserves all of my respect. Truely great man

Man I am so happy Mearsheimer is becoming mainstream. I never thought this would happen. Back then, interview viewership was barely a thousand.

As an orthodox jew, I condemn the terrorist acts and war crimes of Israel. I support the creation of a free and independent Palestinian state. This will end all the violence. As Jews we need to accept that Israel is the occupying force and we need to do the right thing and give Palestinians their own independent state free from Israeli interferences. CRITCIZING ISRAEL ISN'T ANTISEMITISM!!!  JUDAISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ZIONISM !!!!

Saw a documentary made by Israel TV about Gaza some years ago. What was interesting is how terrible life was there. In the film an Israeli Truck driver tries to make a delivery into Gaza through the many checkpoints. He does this route daily. He gets pulled out of his truck and beaten by the soldiers and he keeps asking for “The Major - get the Major”. Eventually the Major shows up, has a discussion while the soldiers get in a few more kicks and rifle butts - and they let him in. Then onto the ambulance they turn back with patients, school children trying to get to school and people trying to get home from work or vice versa. Just a descent into insanity.

"Win every battle, lose the war." Difficult to do, but Netanyahu has put his whole being behind the goal.
  • The world is fed-up American's hypocry, and the people are waking up. Full stop.

Best summary of the situation in the Middle East I’ve heard

Just saw him here in Sydney in person literally 48 hours ago. He is well worth listening to.

No notes! He doesn't need notes. John Mearscheimer was born to teach. He imparts understanding. He wraps his mind around what's actually happening . . . and he breaks it down for us. No commentator is more insightful or more honest.
  • "We want peace." Well, problem is that peace is not simply the absence of war. Before October 7th the situation in Gaza and Palestine more broadly was not one of peace.

I am amazed by this person personality. Talking about such a controversial topic in such an "objective" way. Just describing analyzing and interpreting. And also the interviewer respect and journalistic qualities (asking questions, raising potential counterarguments but not preaching or trying to convince, i.e. being a journalist and not a politician)
