⛵ Sailing in the furious fifties - Join us for Part II of this five week film and science expedition, as we sail from the remote and volcanic South Sandwich Islands at 59˚South to South Georgia at 54˚South and on to Stanley in the Falkland Islands at 52˚South. Come aboard Skip Novak's expedition sailing yacht Pelagic Australis and explore the North shores of South Georgia with us!

In Part I we left Stanley in the Falkland Islands just after Christmas in December 2019 and sailed across 1200nm of wild Southern Ocean to drop our anchor on the shores of the remote South Sandwich Islands, which lie within the Antarctic Convergence Zone. After over a week of scientific work there, bad weather forced us to weigh anchor and head North towards the relatively safe bays of South Georgia. Join us as we continue our journey up the coast and explore new and visit previous anchorages.

As usual the time flew by and we could have easily stayed much, much longer! But with a schedule to follow and flights to catch we hoisted the sails and set course for the Falkland Islands. We had to cross 700nm of Southern Ocean - against the prevailing winds and currents to reach our final destination Stanley.

That penguin riding that huge wave onto the rock was one of the coolest things I've ever seen any animal do. It was so graceful considering the circumstance. So good at reading the water.
  • I watch far too many sailing channels which either are in the Med or crossing over to the Caribbean or from the states to the Caribbean and to be honest it’s getting boring watching the same old places just different faces, so what a fantastic breath of fresh air YOUR CHANNEL IS. This is proper sailing with proper sailors.

My wife and I were thrilled to be able to visit South Georgia last February including St. Andrews Bay and Prion Island. When we past Shag Rocks we were treated to a sighting of 2 Blue Whales. I we were glad to be aboard a 100 meter ship. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
  • Stumbled across these videos by accident, absolutely captivating and charming 👍
  • I really enjoyed this video. The albatross dance was spectacular. It's marvellous that you are able to follow you passion. Thanks so much for sharing Mike

  • Amazing voyage to the South Sandwich Islands. Thank you what a great episode.
  • I visited The Falklands/Antarctica/South Georgia on HMS Endurance between 2001 and 2003. What a privilege and I'm eternally grateful I had the opportunity. Great memories.
  • @sunline24
I love how a day you call good would keep sun seekers in a safe harbor and make a whole video about their anchor alarm going off. Keep up the great work on the videos.
  • Kia Ora enjoying your videos while isolating with C19; it's the best distraction; the footage of the albatross was especially impressive they are beautiful birds and so at ease in that climate.

Sophie, Cris, thank you for the glimpse at the clearance and beauty of the south. You are contributing another sight on the variety of seas. Reading your comment below I was thinking “No! Don’t keep it short!! I want to see more!” Although I know how much time editing films takes, please let us take part more in the daily life on board. Your sailing skills must be tremendous, letting us take part would not be considered bragging. Is this a Bestevaer you’re sailing? How could you afford such a boat at your age? How does the interior look (loved your excursion to the “fridge”). How much time do you spend on maintenance? How much condensation water does the temperature gap produce? So many questions...
  • Sophie & Chris are a very hard working conscientious crew… Skip chose wisely!👍😎

Most excellent, my new favorite sailing channel. And I really appreciate your reverence for nature. You are both so capable and seem to work so well together.
  • Your videos blow me away. I'll never be able to see this. I am very grateful for this gift of your video. The k you kindly.
  • What an extraordinary place, thank you for sharing it with us.
