Jan Zelezny broke the javelin world record on 06/04/1993 with a distance of 95.54m in South Africa. Off the back of his recent world title victory, Zelezny competed in Sheffield and in ideal conditions he threw just short of the record in round 2 but exceeded it by 12cm in round 3. At the time of posting this video these two throws are the second and third longest in history behind his 98.48m set in 1996.

I was at this meet and honestly we were worried about the distance runners’ safety.. Increidble athlete..
  • @santeenl
Can't imagine this these days, 2 throws over 95m after each other? Really awesome!
  • @Defy5
Zelezny looks quite like a ordninary man, not as muscular as many athletes but his speed and technique are oustanding!
  • Incredible talent, perfect technique, his run up does not slow at all into the throw. Unbeatable. So many muscled up throwers these days. Lots of big talk and predictions. So many with one or two or a few big throws and then they fade away. Zelezny is legend.

I've seen him throw 97 measured and 99-100 on practice throw wich he stepped over a bit. :D At Kuortane Finland, in the 90's
  • I was there! I witnessed this and also got him to sign my Maxx cards tshirt (I was a competition winner and got me meet the stars!). What a day!

    Absolutely unbelievably outstanding

Stadium designers: How large should we make this field? Jan Zelezny: Yes

I beat him once - in Euro Juniors in '85 - he was quick and skinny - too quick for his technique at the time - in '87 he set the 1st of his WR's - now at 98m which I don't think will be broken in my lifetime or his - quite simply the greatest T&F athlete of all time.
  • I love his reaction. It was like 'Yep, that's what I was trying to do". What a cool dude.
  • I LOVE HIS RUNNUP, AND HOW HARD AND FAST HE SMASHES THE JAVELIN FROM HIS HAND!!! HAKAN
  • @mlaro888
Love watching Zelezny throw! Was lucky enough to see him compete at the 2001 worlds and throw a 92.8m for the gold, while Aki Parviainen threw a 91.31m
  • @NTeiras
the 5 best throws of all time are all his
  • @hogo1
unreal, looking at his size and body shape you would not think he would be a good thrower, but he is so explosive and has excellent technique
  • @sifsai
He changes his runup in the second throw, watch the follow through compared to the first. Imagine having just thrown 95m and missed the WR by centimetres. He adapted an extra 30 cm out of his runup and still threw further! Javelin genius was Jan.
