Lyrics:
Every single night
I endure the flight
Of little wings of white-flamed
Butterflies in my brain
These ideas of mine
Percolate the mind
Trickle down the spine
Swarm the belly, swelling to a blaze
That's where the pain comes in
Like a second skeleton
Trying to fit beneath the skin
I can't fit the feelings in
Every single night's alight with my brain

People love to use the word “underrated” so loosely. Fiona has never been underrated, she has even won a Grammy. From what I know, her albums have all been highly acclaimed, and her current album is no exception. Just because she doesn’t get shoved into your face like Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, and all the leading mainstream musicians, doesn’t make her underrated. She chose the path of art and music, not fame, that’s why her music is still very well represented and relevant. Her concerts all do really well, and that’s why she continues to make music, because she likes the response her music gets. I would hate to see her get overrated, because that would possibly mean that she wouldn’t have much say in what her music should sound like and where her career should be going, she’s in total control and I’m very happy to see where her music is going and how it continues to evolve. 🖤
  • Everyone talks about the lyrics. For me it's the wondrous melodies she effortlessly wrests from strange, discordant chord progressions. It's jazzy but not jazzy. It's punk but not punk. Like all my favourite music, the melodies of this song make feel things I can't express.
  • This is the perfect example of pure raw undeniable talent not selling out to the shitty music industry. She’s still making music and it’s awesome as usual. I love this woman

She is so brutally honest about herself in her songs.

Some of you I worry about. She IS respected and beloved to anyone that matters and to critics. She just put out one of the most beloved albums of the years. Pop charts are meaningless. Stop worrying about them.

THIS was my very first video I looked up on YouTube. Ever.

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. Fiona straddles that line gracefully.

one of the most underrated geniuses of our time... until you mention Fiona Apple, then they say "yeah!? what happened to her?" Nothing.. you stopped listening.

“I’m tired of whys choking on whys just need a little because because” -Can you even grasp how genius that is? Fiona Apple is a national f’ing treasure!

I am a heavy metal guy but I love her music. It's so exceptional.

I can see exactly why Hi-Fi Rush's version went with the more spy thriller "femme fatale" take on this song, it feels like such a natural extension and direction for a cover. Both versions are absolutely amazing and complement each other so well.

The beat kicks, but then I take in the lyrics, and the song just chills me to the bone. "My pretty mouth will frame the phrases that will disprove your faith in man.'

Fiona Apple is a great example of how big production companies do their best to snuff out true talent that won't sell out to their bullshit

That extra spiraling piano riff in the background at 2:57-3:00 just blows me away, it doesn't NEED to be there but it adds soooo much depth, haunts my ears
  • @ValkyrieGothic
"sometimes my mind dont shake and shift. But most of the time it does" - Probably the most relatable thing I've ever heard in a song not about being tired.

When the pawn was one of the best albums of the 20 century

Also she’s an old soul . Ancestral type . I see the fire in her eyes . She’s a powerful woman 👩nothing short of inspirational!
  • I let the beast in too soon I don't know how to live without my hand on his throat I fight him always and still O darling, it's so sweet You think you know how crazy How crazy I am You say you don't spook easy You won't go But I know And I pray that you will Fast as you can, baby Run, free yourself of me Fast as you can I may be soft in your palm But I'll soon grow hungry for a fight And I will not let you win My pretty mouth will frame the phrases That will disprove your faith in man So if you catch me trying to find my way into your heart From under your skin Fast as you can, baby Scratch me out, free yourself Fast as you can Fast as you can, baby Scratch me out, free yourself Fast as you can Sometimes my mind don't shake and shift But most of the time, it does And I get to the place where I'm begging for a lift Or I'll drown in the wonders and the was And I'll be your girl, if you say it's a gift And you give me some more of your drugs Yeah, I'll be your pet, if you just tell me it's a gift 'Cause I'm tired of whys, choking on whys Just need a little because, because I let the beast in and then I even tried forgiving him, but it's too soon So I'll fight again, again, again, again, again And for a little while more I'll soar the uneven wind, complain and blame the sterile land But if you're getting any bright ideas, quiet dear I'm blooming within Fast as you can, baby wait watch me, I'll be out Fast as I can, maybe late but at least about Fast as you can leave me, let this thing run its route Fast as you can, fast as you can Fast as you can, fast as you can

Been listening to Fiona Apple for the last hour. Never heard her before. I don't think I have ever heard a woman whose songs could be quite so scary.
