1025r: 60D Mower Deck Eats the Weeds! Do You Need A Bush Hog? Why We Failed our Customer!

Published 2020-05-17
Today we are at Derek’s house to perform a mowing project with our 1025r 60 inch drive over mower deck. Turns out, we failed to complete the job. Find out why, and see the durability of the 60D mower deck! Depending on what you’re mowing - do you even need a rotary cutter?

I had the same problem as you before . I saw an add for cut my over grown fields 2 times for a good hunting spot . I had a b 7100 with a 4 foot bush hog at the time and it beat me and the tractor up. I did 3/4 the field and went home with a flat tire and never went back!

You really should not shut off an overheating engine, you should let it idle to keep the waterpump circulating the coolant through the radiator and allow the fan to do its job at least until the temp comes back down. Clean the beard off the grill, clean the radiator screen, and also the hydraulic oil cooler too. Carrying a small battery powered leaf blower along with me comes in handy in these types of conditions.

Random tip in a situation like this. When you are going to leave behind a bunch of clippings, and have the option, I like to cut in a giant square or circle pattern or multiple of them. This way you are not shooting the clippings back onto the area you just cut in the previous pass. You end up leaving a single or multiple rows of clippings you can pick up after the cut.
  • When it over heats, you should always reduce RPM’s to an idle and let it run and never shut it off unless you have something leaking coolant other than the over flow bottle/container.

This was a really good instructional video. Newbies to any tractors that do grass/brush work for the first time do not know how fast a tractor can overheat from just what you have demonstrated. Glad to see it has an automatic shutoff for overheat, that is nice to know. Didn't always be that way.

we mow 20 acres witht the x738 The trick is to use a brush hog first. then mow with a belly mower
  • When I mow, I bring along a battery-operated leaf blower. Invaluable with clearing off all the debri from the filter & front grill. Before parking the jd, I blow everything off, then a quick water hose down. I also wear a mask.
  • A big electric leaf blower is a great way to clean up a dusty mower rig.
  • If you are able to mow in a counter clockwise direction you will only have to move the grass once instead of hitting it twice when you go back and forth.

Mate a little tip, carry a battery powered blower. Saves popping the hood all the time ;).

I've found that the JD 400, 700 series garden tractors are very strong for brush hog type of field mowing. Similar to the 1025 compacts.
  • I think your hydro cooler is in danger of over heating in that situation as well.
  • Dash, It's generaly a good idea to drive back and forth in a new field to find the rocks or other obstacles that may cause problems first. I have foothill property in Coarsegold and know how dusty it gets mowing with my 1989 Craftsman Gt-18 with 44" deck.. I've litterly been covered in chsff from moving a couple of acres of field grass.
  • Dash, I have an experienced fried with a 1025 R and he has a blower to not only blow the grill and pre screen off but also the radiator from behind when he notices the temperature gauge goes up halfway.

II get my 1025R next week and its my 6th and last tractor. Two had the radiator reversed, Kubota, as you noted. It does not make a difference where the air pulls into the radiator, all the screens get clogged. I say its a 50-50 either way. But thinking back , especially with belly mower, the reverse radiator can be more of an issue. For sure if you need to wash out the radiator itself, the rear one is more of a hassle. The marketing around the rear mounted radiator staying cleaner is BS, nothing special about that design.

Wire in a cheap compressor for blowing out the radiator, deck, and inflating the tires. $100 investment from Amazon and worth it!

For that field you need a flail mower. As far as reverse air flow not getting clogged, my X495 AWS has reverse flow and clogs just as fast as my 1025r TLB. My 3046r TL doesn't clog as easy as it is much taller. You best change the engine oil after that job as you pretty much cooked the oil unless you have full synthetic like Rotella T6. Enjoy your tractor

I’m in my 16th season of mowing several acres of rough pasture with a 2305 and 60” RFM. The advantage of the RFM and rotary cutter is that the mess is happening behind me. I trapped 29 moles the year before I started mowing. The first few years were a mess. It’s still a bucking bronco show. If it wasn’t mine I wouldn’t do it. That customer needs his own machine. I’m debating about a 1025R and MMM in the future. Your videos are helpful to me.

you need a gas power hand blower to keep it cleaned off the grill
