What amazed me when I was first learning about the 1665 Black Plague of London is that some people who caught the bubonic plague did, amazingly, survive. Lancing the buboes may have helped, may have not, but it was extremely painful. Blistering poultices were also used on the buboes, causing still further suffering and pain for the patient. Pneumonic plague was much deadlier, and swift. I can’t imagine the horror of living through a plague year. The chaos and terror as people drop like flies around you, and, in the 1665 London plague, being locked up in your home with a guard outside, keeping you imprisoned as your family died helpless and trapped.
