  • I heard if you say nutmeg in the mirror three times, Townsend will kick down your door and throw hardtack at you.

My dad, who was born in 1908. Told us about popping corn in a pot of salt. They then would grind it and let that soak in milk kept warm so it would it curdled some. They would add a little honey if they had it and that was often their breakfast. Also used popped sorghum seeds.

The best almost 3 hours I’ve ever spent while processing garden vegetables!

Its amazing to me as an Englishman of the modern day just how similar these foods are to stuff I ate as akid in the 1980s, sure we had Sunny delight and poptarts but most of the food we had from Northern England as positively poor working class people is so similar to the meals presented here, from the christmas cake, bacon and split pea stew often with bacon bones, lob scouse, baked potatoes, tenderized beef and mushroom (scotch colops) with mash potatoes. Lots of apple and various berry puddings such as pies, tarts and crumbles, and left over milk would be turned to cheese. As a kid we often went into the local wilds to forage for foods, seafoods, berries, mushrooms and other wild edibles. I feel an real connection with my local Northern English peasant history to the colonial history you replicate. 😊

I laughed uncontrollably for almost all of the dairy episode.

What wonderful interpreters you all have come across through the years. Love seeing the passion everyone has for history and their specialties
  • @done611
We absolutely love your cooking shows. The recipes are simple, hearty and filling. I recently made a pork, apple, raisin and onion skillet meal and it was absolutely delicious. I got the idea from your show.

  • So crazy how society shifts. Raw, organic, unprocessed his were for peasants, and now you pay a fortune for those kinds of goods today!

  • Some guy was making his parched corn water... and FORGOT ABOUT IT.... and a month later, when he was REALLY thirsty, he found corn beer.... visited his buddy the rum trader, and lookout boys, we had MOONSHINE!!! They never left those Appalacian hills... 6 generations later they still spoke of "my pappy's pappy" and his "white lightnin'!"
