The recent escalation in hostilities in Ukraine has put at least 7.5 million children in grave danger of physical harm, severe emotional distress, and displacement. Save the Children have been in Ukraine since 2014, and are on the ground near the Ukrainian border providing people with life-saving assistance as they flee the conflict. Please donate, every little bit counts.

This is Putin’s war and to understand it you have to look at the story Putin tells himself and the Russian people that helped justify this invasion. In this video I explore Putin’s motive and make the case that Russia has already lost this war.

Thank you to the excellent reporting by: The New York Times, The BBC, Reuters, The Economist. Thank you to all those on the ground who sent me videos and perspectives about the situation.

  • @ailo4x4
"The intel was exactly right." As a career intel analyst, that is not a sentence you hear very often.
  • The logistics of war is something a lot of people tend to overlook
  • @yossefs
Definitely need a current update Johnny!!
  • This video is almost two years old... Johnny can you make an updated video all the way from start thru September 2023? With current events on this conflict in Ukraine and show how all parties involved have been affected, the relation of this war with BRICS, the African Rising and the Demoralization of the global economy?
  • History has taught us that invading a country is easy, but keeping it is near impossible.
  • @Xavierpng
Huge thanks for calling the army "Putin army" instead of "Russian army". And for so much effort you are putting into it. Great work.
  • To everyone asking to update the video, he can't do that, Joni has already spent the money he got for this video.
  • @hillmieahmad
Dont feel shy to make an update of your assessment 2 years ago.
  • Seeing the unity of the Ukrainian people gives me goosebumps.
  • As a Russian I feel terrible about what has already happened to Ukraine as well as about the upcoming economical catastrophe we're flying towards because of this war nobody asked for. I'll probably get mobilized if the war won't end soon, until then I'm going to protest for as long as I can.
  • A friend of mine was trapped in Kyiv and slept in air-raid shelters and after days, with a lot of luck, made it to Hungary and back to Germany. We were worried sick and what she told us was just disturbing. My mother has friends who are Polish by birth and their relatives still live in the villages on the Ukrainian border and there is also pure fear. Polish TV shows the full extent and misery of the poor refugees - in Germany you see much less of it at least on TV, my mother visited her friends, and they translated the TV program into German and all the people in the living room were crying. Half of us were also once part of the Warsaw Pact (GDR), we are also terribly worried. We are collecting clothes and food, many are signing up on lists and offering housing for refugees, some of my friends are travelling to the border region to help despite the horrendous gas prices (equivalent to $8.40 per gallon currently, diesel even more!). We need to meet this insane clown in Russia with full force. And always keep in mind: This is Putin's war, not the war of all Russians! Here, Russian migrants (of which there are many in Germany) are already being hostile and threatened in the worst way. That makes me sad. Free Ukraine!
  • I sit in switzerland, considered one if the safest places on earth. but there is something in the air ever since this war started, that makes many of us worry, many of us alert. we are a generation that was gifted with peace and democracy, built on the blood of our grandparents. we have to face the fact that it is not to be taken for granted. seeing ukraine suffer is a vision of what could happen to many more countries. thank you for giving us a perspective of hope. i hope europe/ukraine stays brave and doesn't back down. it is not a matter of ukraine alone, it is a matter of all of us, of our home and our prosperity. ukraine is fighting for the kind of democratic freedom we are born into. They give me hope that people can still unite, and withstand terror.
  • That picture of the elderly Russian lady protesting is heart wrenching.....and then u see the law enforcement take her away ☹️

As a creator myself I’m very selective on who I support on Patreon but I’m a proud enthusiastic supporter of you. Your style, storytelling, editing is a huge inspiration to me I really mean that.

In all fairness ( and given the investigative resources now at his disposable in the form of his excellent team) Johnny needs to make a further video on this subject in which the following facts/events are covered: - The declaration at the end of the 2008 NATO conference in Bucharest that Georgia and Ukraine were to targeted for NATO membership - The fact that the 2008 declaration would have been an INVITATION rather than a watered down declaration but for the efforts of Merkel and Sarkozy and why the idea so appalled. - The role of Victoria Nuland and Ambassador Pyatt in orchestrating the 2014 coup as documented in that phonecall and subsequently confirmed by their liasion on the ground Andrii Telizhenko who then served in the coup government - The Minsk accords negotiated between Ukraine and Russia by Merkel and new French president Francois Hollande in 2015 and why - mysteriously - they were never implemented - The December 2021 draft treaty based on the same previously agreed Minsk accords which Vladimir Putin offered to Joe Biden to avoid the need for invasion to address Russia's security concerns and Biden rejected while maintaining a media blackout of the event - On the matter of the legitimacy of security concerns for a nation, America's Monroe Doctrine which deems any military activity in the western hemisphere by a nation not located there an act of war against America and accordingly the reason why Kennedy would not have had to get congressional approval for invading Cuba in the Cuban Missile Crisis, or, indeed going the full monty and launching nuclear missiles at the Soviet Union itself - in relation to security concerns, what relevance if any the agreement made by Gorbachev and the Bush Sr administration in 1990 that Russia would allow German re-unification provided America undertook to not expand NATO "one inch East" - The fact that just a couple of weeks after this video was made - and over 500,000 Ukrainian lives ago - Erdogan of Turkey successfully brokered a ceasefire treaty between Ukraine and Russia - again in principle the same as those Minsk accords - which both sides were happy with but Joe Biden sent Boris Johnson to Kiev to persuade Zelensky not to sign - For completeness, it would also be helpful for Johnny to square the public statements of senior members of the US establishment such as Mitch McConnell about " fighting to the last Ukrainian" and the conflict being about "bleeding Russia" - which manifestly puts it in the neo-conservative Liberal Hegemony Project, best delineated by John J Mearsheimer - with the "unprovoked aggression by Putin" position he leans into in this video.
