You can listen to this a million times and not get tired of it.

Heck yeah! This classic album notably included contributions from all four members of fellow Georgians, R.E.M.. The Indigo Girls were considered Folk-Rock/Americana and had a large audience with Alternative and College radio, alongside contemporaries like Tracey Chapman, Suzanne Vega and 10,000 Maniacs (another wonderful female-led band with multiple hits you guys still need to dive into). And as one of the first openly lesbian act of the 1980s (k.d. lang, Melissa Etheridge, and Sophie B. Hawkins didn't come out until the 1990s), The Indigo Girls were like The Beatles for ladies who love ladies. I saw a few of their shows in the 1990s, and their largely female audiences would go ABSOLUTELY BONKERS, screaming and throwing their underwear. It was awesome as heck. As far as the "flute", that was actually an Irish tin whistle, so it fits the St. Paddy's day vibe pretty nicely. You should check out "Galileo" and "Shame on You" next. And to circle back to fellow Folk-Rock/College Rock act (and friends of R.E.M.) 10, 000 Maniacs, you should check out their singles. Natalie Merchant imbues their songs with warmth, but also a strong social responsibility, through their justice-minded, topical lyrics. Listen to "Like the Weather" (about mental illness), "What's the Matter Here?" (about child abuse), "Eat for Two" (about teen pregnancy), "Trouble Me" (about caring for the aging), 'These Are Days" (about the bitter pang of nostalgia), "Candy Everybody Wants" (about capitalism and the media landscape), and their live/unplugged cover of Patti Smith Group's "Because the Night" (okay, this one's just about sex, LOL), which was written by Bruce Springsteen. They have other great covers, too. They covered "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens, "Everyday Is Like Sunday" by Morrissey (you still need to check out the original!), and "More Than This" by Roxy Music (with a new lead singer, after Natalie Merchant went solo in the mid-90s).

I'm an 80s kid, graduated from college in 91. This was a big deal back in the day.

Whenever I'm feeling a little adrift in my life, I get in the car and crank up "Closer to Fine, "Hammer and a Nail" and "Galileo" and sing at the top of my lungs. These three Indigo Girls masterpieces always lift me up and inspire me. (And for a nice romantic one from them, check out "The Power of Two")

I have been a fan of these ladies for a few decades. Not only are the amazing artists, but they also stand for rights and agendas that are important to humanity. Saw them in concert when I lived in Phoenix. Absolutely one of the best concerts I’ve EVER been to.

They are actually a folk-pop group. HUGELY into the Native American rights movement. I've seen the live twice, once full acoustic, once full electric. Both were AWESOME!! Next please react to my favorite rune of theirs, "Blood and Fire".

Cant say enough about this group. In my opinion "Ghost" is one of the greatest songs lyrically ever written. A must listen. Thanks guys for the post and reaction. As always stay safe and much love

I was a 17 yr old metalhead in 1989 when this came out, and I loved this song then, and still do. You know artists are great when they can get the attention of teenage boys rocking out, and turn their ears to another genre. They're still touring. Seen them twice in the past decade.

The backing music (including the whistle) is Irish band Hothouse Flowers. Check out their "Don't Go".

My friends and I saw the Indigo Girls in 1992, a few days after we all graduated from college. We were a few rows from the stage and pretty much shouted "I spent four years prostrate to the higher minds, got my paper and I was free!"

Wow. This takes me back. I saw them live many times when I was in college at UGA. Michael Stipe sings on another song ("Kid Fears") on this album and occasionally joined the girls on stage, unannounced. The '80s were a great time to be a college kid in Athens, Georgia.

Such great songwriters and singers and guitarists. Their harmonies are amazing. You really do need to keep checking out their catalog.

YES!!! I knew you'd love this one. One of the best songs of the late 80s, one of the best songs period. Amy and Emilie have been rockin' it for almost 40 years, and this is widely regarded as their biggest song. If you dive further down this rabbit hole, "Galileo" is a great song, as is "Hammer and Nail", "Least Complicated" and, if you're feeling adventurous, do their collaboration with P!nk, "Dear. Mr. President".
