Reversing Muni Trains @ Castro Station

Thanks to SFMTA’s ongoing rehabilitation work in the Twin Peaks Tunnel, late night weekend service in the Muni Metro is truncated at Castro station, with bus shuttles carrying riders on to Forest Hill and West Portal.

This results in a rare service pattern not seen since the failed attempts to run the T-Third as a independent line from the K-Ingleside, with trains using the Castro crossover to reverse into the inbound platform. More interesting to me, it also means the Muni Lady makes a very rare announcement: “The next inbound train will enter the inbound platform from the right.”

While frustrating for many riders, the Twin Peaks rehabilitation project is critical to ensuring the 100 year old tunnel is able to serve San Francisco residents for another century, and will allow for faster + more reliable service in that section of the Muni Metro. Weekend closures are in effect now, in preparation for a 2-month, 24/7 closure in July and August.

  • Not Castro Valley, just Castro. Castro Valley is in the East Bay and is served by BART, not MUNI.
  • Cool video. Can you do one with Outbound trains entering stations from the left?
