The New Hope, and New Worry, of Kamala Harris

2024-07-23に共有
As Democrat after Democrat races to anoint Vice President Kamala Harris as their party’s presidential candidate, it has become clear that she will face no real challenge for the nomination.

Nate Cohn, chief political analyst for The Times, and Reid J. Epstein, a Times reporter covering politics, discuss what that smooth path for Ms. Harris could mean for her broader campaign.

Guest:

• Nate Cohn (www.nytimes.com/by/nate-cohn) , the chief political analyst for The New York Times.
• Reid J. Epstein (www.nytimes.com/by/reid-j-epstein) , who covers politics for The New York Times.

Background reading:

• On her first full day in the race (www.nytimes.com/2024/07/22/us/politics/kamala-harr…) , Ms. Harris drew endorsements from her final possible rivals, hauled in record sums of cash and attacked Donald J. Trump.
• Here are the latest polls (www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/us/elections/poll…) on the Harris-Trump matchup.

The only thing democratic about the Democratic Party is the name…
  • school buses are yellow and the significance of time are all i need go camel go

So much for the democratic process in selecting our candidates. The NY Times is complicit in this debacle. Shame on you all.

I get the desire for an open convention, or mini primary or something like that. I just don't think it's practical at this point. I also remember what a s*** show the 2020 primary was, with all the hopefuls sniping at each other and saying "pick me" before we collectively shrugged and settled on Joe Biden. I think an open process at this point would look a lot like that, and it wouldn't end well.

This is the second time we’re shoved a candidate without a proper vote. Calling this a coronation is fitting.

As a foreigner.. I like how the US election condenses to a personality match between procecutor and crimimal...
  • Nothing says “save democracy” like not letting people pick their nominee.
  • She's awful. The question was never age. The question was competency. This nominee, that has never earned a single delegate at the ballet box mind you, does not answer the competency question. She has zero prior credits and is loaded with prior failings. Why? Why do this? Why does anyone think this is a good idea?.... Ya'll are incapable of learning.

This conversation makes and comments makes me realize why America is a FN disaster....
  • She's 2 points AHEAD of Trump in the Reuters poll.
  • As California attorney general, she spent years subverting a 2011 Supreme Court ruling requiring the state to reduce its prison population. The overseeing judicial panel nearly found the state in contempt of court.
  • The delegates fell right in line and so will the voters. Democrats LOVE being told what to do. "Liberals don't care what you do, as long as it's mandatory." - Chris Plante
  • So once again the American people do not get to pick their candidate. Not that it matters as they have nobody even decent
  • You have to play the hand you have been dealt. The Democratic leadership is playing that hand. If our country wants to continue the American Democratic experiment, we need to unite and play the hand. The right-wing alternative does not leave power after 4 years. If Kamala Harris is not up for the job, we only have to suffer through for 4 years. Unite.
