There's a famous bit of lore that George Lucas took advantage of the fact the line was going to be overdubbed to hide it. He knew it would change everything, so to avoid spoilers leaking out, he handed out an altered script. As far as everyone on set knew, the big reveal was "Obi Wan killed your father." Mark Hamill was told privately, so that he could react to what David Prowse (Vader's physical actor) was doing rather than what he was saying. Mark tells a funny story about Harrison Ford's reaction at the premier. When the line dropped, Harrison looked over at him "Hey kid, they didn't F__ ing tell ME that."

“He lost his hand!!” Don’t worry love. Star Wars calls that a skywalker tradition

Imagine watching this in the theater and having to wait 2 years to see what happens
  • @PryorTravis
When my wife, who never swears, saw that she yelled "Oh bu-- sh--" about as loud as Luke yelled.

I love how this moment can still affect new viewers, more than 40 years after it came out. Totally stands the test of time.

Going into this compilation, I had a hard time believing that there were people who didn't know Vader was Luke's father, but then I realized that people may know The Line, but they don't know the *context*. And it's also obvious that Luke getting his hand cut off isn't as well-known; seems like that part caught everyone off guard.
  • Hannah's reaction from Just Trust Ash/Don't Trust Hannah, "my brain is scrambled," was hysterical and Amazing!!! hahahah
  • When we saw this in the theatre way back, when Darth Vader said, "I am your father" we all completely tripped out. Everyone in the theatre was yelling and freaked out. Very exciting experience.
  • This is so surreal. I'd seen A New Hope at least 5 times before I learned to write, and all three films nearly 100 times each before I was 13. I wore out multiple VHS tapes! The idea of people never having seen these is like if someone grew up without ever seeing water

I thought it was common knowledge that Vader is Luke's father, But seeing people react for the first time is crazy

I can never get enough of seeing this scene especially for people seeing it for the first time. But it is such an indelible part of pop culture even non-Star Wars fans have heard that.

Now, imagine it is 1980, and you are a 7-year-old watching this in a huge theatre where you can feel the entire audience hold its breath...for three years. Still a key moment in film history... ✋️

They were lucky. They weren't in the line waiting in the theatre for the movie, when Homer Simpson passed close from us and said that DV is Luke's Father
  • @Johnadams20760
you can tell which people have never seen and been sheltered from star wars, their reactions to this are the best there are, as they are the way we all felt when it came out
  • @zekesanchez1851
This is one of my favorite scenes when Luke Skywalker finds out his father is Black...
  • @tresrules16543
I envy the people who were old enough to be able to watch this during it's first release in theaters
  • @shadowwriter329
This never gets old, people who have never seen Star Wars get the biggest plot twist that changed everything. From little kids to adults that somehow never got to enjoy the movies. And when my nieces are old enough, I will be there to show them the movies and see their reactions to the line.

It's a good thing the light saber instantly sealed the wound or Luke would have bled to death.

I remember seeing this in a theater at 8yo and it was pandemonium for this scene. I jumped up and turned to my parents in the row behind my like, "WHAT?!"
