Old rusty Ferrant power transformer removed from a rural 11 kV supply, rusted and low on oil.
BS 1936 standard so I guess it from around the mid 1940's.
11kV/415Volts, 69 Amps/phase.
50 Hertz

  • Beautiful, makes me proud to see the quality that used to come from the UK manufacturers, now we barely even make any steel and those companies that do are foreign owned. I love working on the old stuff, so much easier due to the decent materials and design.

Love the old transformers, lots of good parts worth saving for projects, even the brass fasteners and terminal posts are good to collect!

thank you for taking the effort to film things like this!

Easy to clean up and repair the tank, and repaint to preserve this for the future. It should go without saying that, in this day in age, you don't ever throw things away from as long ago as the 1940's as all that's left is all there ever will be. Future generations need to be able to see this stuff too.

beautiful tech. pure magic. Tames the beast of many kv's with ease for years.

I spent time rebuilding transformers. The oldest i found wete peebles transformers from the thirtys. Those copper wound transformers would go through a lot. The newer aluminum wound ones, one lighteninng strike and they are done

If it didn't have corrosion damage I'd say rebuild it and put it back into service.

1:36, well done, I’m going tomorrow in Melbourne, can’t wait.
  • Our place also has a 10kV supply line and then transformers for 400/230V. The old transformers were replaced.
  • @Destroyed007
Kinda looked like as if the leak started occurring just a few years back prior to replacement

Nice. Got any Reyrolle C gear over there?
  • Cool old gear. If you catch things earlier before too much damage, do they typically get refurbished? Seems like a waste if not. New gear is more expensive than maintenance.

Is there any practical difference between 50hz transformers and 60hz transformers for power transmission? I can see there being a difference in small electronics transformers, but what physical differences are there in large transformers? Different wire size, shape or size or the core, etc, or are they really the same, but are only tested and approved for one frequency?

No oil for insulation n cooling and it's STILL working. Us Brits do over engineer and make things to last, that's a for sure. I'm proud to be British because of our history of engineering, countless inventions and STEM 😊

I see you have given up sticking your tongue across the gap. Sensible chap, still I miss the good old days when you thrutched a wopsy up the Khyber Pass.
