You can't know it in the anime (for being a japanese wordplay), but the actual trigger for Sabo to remember Ace and Luffy was the word "Sakazuki" on the newspaper, because is not only the name of Akainu, but also the name of the sake cup they'd used to drank it together (you can listen to little Ace saying it before they drank it).

I have no idea if it ever got animated or not, but some years back Oda actually drew a little "what if" comic that depicted a very different outcome for the climax of the Marineford war. Perhaps someone could introduce our dear reactors to said story at some point, be it the print or screen version (should the latter even exist)....?

I always saw this as more of Fujitora trusting in fate, so he doesn't fudge his rolls because it would be like trying to guide or change fate. I think he felt the future would be amiss if he moved against fate so he left it to chance, putting into the universe that what he was deciding was Straw Hat's fate and the universe kept on saying "Yeah but...what if not?"
