Monet’s Water-Lily Pond: A Mindful Impression of Peace | National Gallery

Published 2024-06-26
Amongst the most iconic masterpieces in Western modern art, Claude Monet’s water lily paintings came about from a ‘revelation of the enchantment of [his] pond.’ Monet created a series of over 250 of these paintings, capturing the everchanging light at many different times of day, over three decades. Four of these are in the National Gallery’s collection.

Curator Chiara di Stefano gives us a close look at one of these pictures, 'The Water-Lily Pond'. It evokes silence and a dreamlike quality, with peaceful and calm, still waters. She shows us in this film how Monet’s series of pictures is not about transience, but permanence.

Claude Monet's 'The Water-Lily Pond' is currently on loan to York Art Gallery.

To celebrate our Bicentenary, 12 paintings from the collection are being lent to 12 venues across the UK. See various locations and visit: www.nationalgallery.org.uk/exhibitions/across-the-…

light is so transient. and by dropping 3 letters and putting 2 in their place, life.
  • He must have been such a happy man. And I couldn’t help thinking of cats. My four oriental cats loved to position themselves around my black rescue. I’ve. Taken so many photos of them because they were so beautiful together. It’s trying to get the essence of the beauty, while in the same time part of the beauty is you, watching it. And it’s impossible to catch that. The only thing you can do is trying to get close.

  • A beautiful documentary on some of the most iconic paintings of Monsieur Monet!! A man in love with nature and a man in possession of the most refined sense of aesthetics he created his beautiful garden as intricately as he painted his great masterpieces!! Some of his most iconic paintings of water lillies now grace the walls of The National Gallery where visitors can look, experience and feel transported to the beautiful garden and the natural surroundings created by the great French master!!😊😊❤❤
  • Such a good talk. I have a poster of this painting (from the NG gift shop) framed and it was really special to connect what I see to what Monet might have in mind. Thank you.

Well stated. I have always considered a lily pond is the ultimate reflective and calming view. Who can hurry past such exotica?
  • Better exposition and presentation of Monet’s work in less than 10 minutes than in the hour and a half I spent at “The Monet Experience” in DC two weeks ago. Thank you.

The garden is very beautiful - and in some little moments you are able to get a picture without visitors 😝
