This might be the first time I have eaten jackfruit. Certainly if there were times before this, I don't remember them. Let's give this pulled pork stand-in a taste...

Afterthoughts & Addenda Comparing it to meat - Throughout this video, I compared this product to pulled pork because that is exactly how the product positions itself. It is not unfair to review a product in the exact context it is pitched (indeed, I would say it would be unfair to do otherwise). tropicalsunfoods.com/products/bbq-jackfruit

Thank you for addressing a meat substitute as something that doesn't have to replicate meat entirely, to the point of fooling people. I am a lifelong vegetarian and to me wanting to replicate meat exactly is not a desirable objective. I like being able to eat food that I don't normally get to, so the stand in description is spot on.

It really needs to by dry fried in a non-stick pan (perhaps with the tiniest amount of oil). Done carefully the sugars in the sauce caramelise and slightly burn. It tastes more savoury and sticky and is a vast improvement.

I'm alright Jack is an old English phrase meaning someone who only thinks about themselves. It's also a 1959 film along the same lines.
  • SIX cans of this were accidentally included in a recent grocery delivery of mine and I’ve been scared to try it so I’m very glad for this video, thank you!

As with many canned foods you can make it better at home with more effort and time. I've had good luck with getting canned jackfruit without any sauce and putting it in a food dehydrator. After it's dried you can reconstitute it with a super savoury stock (try to avoid putting anything sweet in the stock as the fruit is already sweet). Once you replace all the water in the fruit with something savoury and salty it is a lot closer to meat and the dehydration process gives a slightly firmer bite. Then make a barbecue sauce to your preferences and mix it all up. This is a favourite with my vegetarian girlfriend but we reserve it for thing like BBQs because of the extra effort involved.

Now I'm dying to know what is in the wasp drawer!😮
  • green jackfruit is a very low glycemic index alternative to tubers or rice for diabetics. when it's not smothered in sugars and vinegar anyway.

hi Mike! remember that little display turntable you were messing with a while ago? i wonder if it might be possible to set a can on top of it, then use the panoramic photo functionality of a smartphone to 'scan' the label so it will be a nice flat image, without removing the label. perhaps would make for an interesting experiment...

When there is pulled pork on the menu, I alwasy smoke up some king oyster mushroom in cherry wood smoke. Nobody is fooled, but even omnivores came back for more.

In the same fashion, it being weird tropical fruits, maybe you could also give banana blossoms a try at some point. It's not bad, goes well in place of meat, and probably weird enough for weird stuff in a can.
  • I regularly use canned green jackfruit to make a variety of dishes including a vegetarian “crab cake.” I’m not a vegetarian (although I eat like one), but good crabmeat is very expensive and the jackfruit version is very good. I use jackfruit, bread, onions, celery, egg, mayonnaise, and Old Bay seasoning, which is a mix of celery, red and black pepper, paprika, bay, mustard, cardamom, clove, and ginger.
  • I have never had a "meat substitute" that made me think, "Yeah. this is meat." But then again, I have never thought that was the goal. I just look for something that is enjoyable in its own right and lets me fit in socially at specific types of events. I don't get a black bean burger to fool myself or anyone else into thinking I am eating meat. I just want to share a "burger" with my friends at the cookout.

Lol. I'd never considered the marketing potential of the "friends of vegans" demographic. Brilliant.

Enjoying the draw labeled "wasps", no follow up questions.

i mix green jackfruit with sliced onions and mushrooms (and sauce) and bake it in the oven for a good long while. And while it defintily doesn't taste like pork it tastes amazing and is easy and fast to prepare for a hugh group of people (some vegans, some people who can't have pork and some non vegans who just enjoy the taste)

I've had fresh, ripe jackfruit and it's absolutely delicious! I've heard that it's used as a pulled pork substitute, but I've never had it like that. I'm sure it's really good if you're not expecting it to be the same as actual meat. I'd love to taste it prepared like that

I think that given the continuing trend to call meat alternatives ‘This isn’t bacon’ or ‘chicken style bites’ it’s refreshing to see the product marketed for what it is, not what it isn’t.
