  • I have always had a thing for small switcher type engines, both steam and diesel. I have a sentimental attachment to them since they were what I started with. Out of the dozens of engines abs brands I run, I have an entire fleet of small switchers. The bagnall and 48ds are my favorite small Hornby locos. In the states old 0-4-0 are a dime a dozen and are my go to engine for kitbashing. They serve their role, and at the end of the day it’s all about having fun abs doing what you like with your trains.👍
  • Your video was great. I love 0 4 0 locomotives. If you don't have a lot of space they are perfect. Imagine a small country station in the 1930s, the next train to come into the station would probably be a small tank loco with possibly two coaches. So the 0 4 0s would have been ideal for a short county branch line. Well done .
  • I really like the 0 4 0...Have a good few of them...triang /triang hornby all of them..On my small 4 feet by 2 and a half feet layout they look fine...I used to have a much larger layout..well 7 feet by 4 four but it just took up so much room...i packed it away..until i saw some of the Budget Model Railway vids...and was encouraged to build a small cheap layout, using Triang super 4 track...to fit better in the room.Even exhibited it last yr, ! My main interest is G Scale in the garden, which is a whole different game....Always enjoy your vids..Cheers..Ade

I think they're important since they're simple and the lack of detail makes them good for beginners
  • 0-4-0 are perfect for me and my 3 year old son. We only have a 1st radius loop and these fly around no worries. And if one gets broken, not to worry, they around £20 2nd hand on eBay.
  • I say there cool cause it gives new blood to the hobbie

Lovely little models, rule 1 applies in my shed. Most of mine are Hornby, I think I have a dozen or more. Great fun and cheap, what more could you want? Nice vid, thanks for sharing.
  • I had 040 O guage clockwork as a kid, then later 040 OO...they are fanatastic and the best runners..
  • @McMetro
Nice, interesting video 👍 my hornby sentinel is the best 0-4-0 I've ever seen, decent crawl, good detail, NEM pockets 😀 I think the general 0-4-0 chassis is good for projects and conversions, if you can get it to work to a reasonable level, you can use it to build your own locos to attach to it 👍
  • Personally like the little clockwork ones in O gauge from back in the Meccano era of Hornby. Definitely toys, but the quality is excellent, and the clockwork motors are surprisingly powerful, little things go like the wind on a full winding.
  • My only problem with some 0-4-0s is stalling on points with insulated frogs. I keep the wheels and track clean, check all the wheels are picking up OK but still a stutter.
  • Some people in this hobby are a bunch of wankers. I love the 0-4-0 especially the newer slower versions. They run nice and smooth
  • The original unrestricted hornby ones are hilarious.
  • @AdiPullen
I have about 15 small 0-4-0 locos Love them
  • Hi I don't know where you got the idea that folks hate the 0-4-0 locos, just look around on e-bay and see the number that are for sale. If folks did not like them they would not be buying them. The one pain in the but if there are any is the stalling on that big carbuncle of a plastic frog on Hornby's points it really should have been binned years ago and a better set of points brought in similar to the peco set up. Yes I take your point of the speed of the locos but that is once again down to the maker making the gearing not of a better ratio. I also take you to task over getting them to crawl if the wheels are spotlessly clean and the track like wise they will respond and crawl along at a snails pace in my experience anyway. So I like really these locos and if serviced regularly and wheels kept clean there is nothing wrong with these Hornby 0 4 0 locomotives
