Haystack, Basin & Saddleback Mountain

Published 2020-03-08
After talking to Jim Wallace earlier in the week it was said that the range would be broken out. There was a small little rain that happened the night before I went and apparently that rain dropped a foot of snow over the whole range up top! So back to trail braking for me!! After Marcy skylight and Gray breakout I feel like I could do anything! Lol Getting to Haystack was very time consuming. It was very hard to follow the trail and I constantly had to pull out the GPS or else I was going the wrong way. It was definitely a big push to get up there and it took about five hours to get to the Summit from Garden parking lot! You absolutely need an axe for haystack.. in my opinion haystack was more sketchy than Saddleback this day! Haystack is one hell of a steep climb. After getting off haystack and working your way over to basin you are greeted with one of the steepest trails to any mountain summit I have climbed. Basin is just absolutely straight up crazy steep on both sides! Someone had broken out basin from Cole of haystack and basin, over basin to the inbetween big basin and little basin.. And then I was back to trail breaking as I passed the 2 people who were sitting down for lunch In the cole of one of basins false summits. It was even deeper going down basin. Anywhere between a foot and a foot and a half of snow. Got all the way down after some really fun skiing on my snowshoes and approaching Saddleback had to go up this really really steep slide that was filled with really slippery snow. Got past that and then off to the Cliffs I went. I used the axe to help assist the first section of this climb.. The sun was blazing this day and even though it was 20° the ice was melting and falling off the cliffs which gave lots of grippy surface to grab on. I took off the snowshoes and use my hillsound trail crampons! I got to the Summit and it was glorious. Three perfect views today and the best part is that I was safe! Minus the fact that I karate chopped my esophagus with my Ice axe.. as I type this out my esophagus is swollen and Extremely uncomfortable to swallow. On my way out I am a racehorse when it comes to fast walking. Maintaining a 15 minute mile for the last six. I made it out to my car in about 11 hours and five minutes car to car!! What an epic day for completing Winter high peaks number 39, 40, and 41!

Very impressive you did that completely by yourself. I'm certainly not brave enough to go in the middle of the winter when I won't see anyone else completely by myself.
  • I was blown away with the sky as a background for all of that incredible snow scenery Brian! Unbelievable scenery, so incredibly beautiful! Thank you for another AWESOME video Brian! I loved it!

Another excellent video. Any reason why you have been going solo on the recent trips? Isn’t Jonathan Z doing the same winter challenge? I know you’ve joined up in the past.
