Ham Radio Tower Presentation

Published 2019-07-09
After watching my mom lose her battle with cancer in 2011 I took a look at my bucket list and decided to act on it. This is a presentation I gave several years ago to a few amateur clubs in Chicagoland. It was well received and I hope you enjoy it too!

Loved the video. Thank you for sharing your experience(s). I especially appreciate you sharing the things that didn't work as planned. It certainly saves time for those of us planning a tower project. 73 and good DX. K8DQ

David, excellent video! I just stumbled across it as I’m watching all the tower vids that I can. I’m not that far from you either…..Sandwich, IL. Had a Universal Tower back in early 70’s when I had first gotten my General……loved it! Dug the hole by hand and mixed the cement by hand too, but I was 16, so I was energetic. Ha! Now I’m 65 and have another Universal Tower on order. It’ll be a 21-50, and I’m putting a Mosley Pro-67-B on it. Not digging this one though! But my reasoning was similar to yours….lost both parents in late 2019. They fully supported me getting into ham radio when I was a kid on the farm, and I know they’d be thrilled with me getting back into it now. My dilemma is just putting it up and having someone climb it to put the antenna on, or rigging up a winch system to tilt it over. I’ve been an amputee for 43 years so can’t climb it myself. Pluses and minuses to both I think. They’re great towers, and I hear great things about Mosley antennas. Anyway, just wanted to tell you that it was a great video. Tom, WB8KSB

Most tower footers call for rebar in the concrete, so wondering if this one did not? Tower looks great. Edit Nevermind on rebar, I see you already answered in another comment.

Excellent and informative presentation. It looks like you did a great job on the tower. I’m currently planning to put up a Universal HD21-70. Because of medical reasons, and an insistent wife, I don’t plan to climb it. I’m going to come up come up with a way to pull it up. AG4RT
