starting to view minecraft blocks as colours and textures rather than wood and stone is probably the biggest improvement a builder can make.

Only thing I think you missed is that Bdubs woulda added some more shape to the roof with some wonky placed stairs and halfslabs to add like holes as if it were breaking down and not being properly maintained, maybe even added a couple single glass attic windows in a dormer style

You hit on the most important aspects of bdubs style: appreciating the build from a distance, and using darker/lighter blocks to create shadows/highlights. Your example build came out good as well.
