Bernard Falk reports from the Yorkshire seaside town of Hornsea where (in a clear case of nominative determinism) the council has decided to allow nudists onto their beach.

How has news of this nudist beach gone down with the good people of Hornsea? The intrepid reporter bares all in an attempt to get to to the bottom of the story, and see if he can find anyone - other than he - who would dare to brave the chilly Yorkshire coast au natural.

Note: This clip is about naturists, not "naturalists", as Mr Falk states in error…

Originally broadcast 16 October, 1973.

To mark the BBC's 100th birthday, our wonderful archivists have been asked to pick THEIR favourite BBC moments.

"Featuring veteran reporter Bernard Falk wearing nothing but a bush, along with some excellent belligerent vox pops from locals. I visited Hornsea often as a child and it's just like I remember it, grey and cold! I often come across random items like this in the course of my work and the ones that stick in my mind are usually from Nationwide, no programme does random/WTF items like Nationwide." - Isabel

Watching these you realize that Monty Python barely fictionalized British TV...

Now I understand what Monty Python were parodying.

That was brilliant , pure comedy, Especially the old guy at the start who thinks nude sunbathing will be the start of a crime wave of people's homes being burgled and resulting in the total destruction of the town πŸ˜‚
  • @gavinrobb85
Why on earth would you want to go onto a beach with that weather with or without clothes. Hilarious moment in time and views of morality and perspectives. 🀣

Funniest thing I've seen in ages. All reported tongue in cheek. Love it.

I used to watch Nationwide but I don't ever remember it being produced by Eric Idle.
  • @betsyrocks
These people are straight out of a Monty Python sketch
  • @vesavius
What we need to remember is that these people were born of the Victorian age. Ofc they see this like they do. I'm not going to point at them and mock them for it, they are a product of their age.

The BBC β€” nay, the British people β€” are a gift to the universe.

At 1:50 the old man gives a stern look to the policeman, (the HANDSOME policeman!) who can be seen smiling before dropping the smile he sees the camera turn toward him. The policeman was young and was amused by the old man’s rant
  • good olde Bernard Falk NATIONWIDE intrepid reporter. He would go round to find strange and funny stories but was a firm family fav.
sadly I think he passed away in his late 40s or early 50s
We could do with someone like that now rather than the wooden reporting on BBC Breakfast or GMTV and similar.

is there any more of Bernard?
    thanks
