Defense Mechanisms | How We Manage Anxiety (and Get Stuck)

Published 2023-01-09
Defense Mechanisms in psychology are our inbuilt anxiety management system. Denial, projection, repression, intellectualization, shield us from anxiety and protect our self-esteem. But while they are certainly useful to keep us functioning in our everyday life, defense mechanisms can get in the way of us thriving in our life. Because defense mechanisms use distortions, they always involve some form of self-deception - and can therefore keep us stuck in never facing important uncomfortable emotions or memories. Freud and the entire psychodynamic tradition studied defense mechanisms intensely and in this video I want to share some of their basic insights with you.

I understand projective identification 😭😭 because when I tried to communicate something very important to my mother she used a range of strategies to shut me down. First she was the victim of me, hurt by me. My father told me off for hurting her. I kept tryign to explain and I was shut down, given the cold shoulder. I kept trying and I was told I was angry and detached from reality! After three years, my mother told me it was merely my perception that she was giving me the cold shoulder and I raged at her, raaaaaaaaged at her like I was craaaaaaaaazy. I was so angry, to having been given the silent treatment for 3 years that in the end, I was ''angry'' and I was ''crazy''. So I handed them angry and crazy on a plate.

Wow. Equating emotions with “intruding pathogens”. That was quite an evocative metaphor right there.

This was really interesting, it went a bit deeper than other videos I've watched about defence mechanisms. you speak English with a lovely accent, not American, Not English, but like a native of somewhere English speaking.
  • Salute to your grip on the topic and crispy concise communication skills you have got.such clarity is rare!
  • @markmarki9511
Your explaination of projective identificatiom is one of the bests I heard - I too struggled to understand that one. Keep making these informative vids. They really are helpful and interesting.
  • Please continue your amazing work!!! You are literally helping thousands of struggling students!!!
  • Just discovered you! Brilliant! Will purchase Psychoanalytic Diagnosis. Lecturers online throw these terms around without explaining them in detail. I was in Psychoanalysis with a Lacanian therapist but it didn’t work out. Now with a Psychotherapist with an MBBS and a PhD in Psychological Medicine. I am in Melbourne, Australia. You are an excellent teacher and communicator.
  • You explain these terms so well, after a confusing lecture I come to your videos and listen to your simple explanations. thank you.
  • @ChrissieGregory
Thanks for the great explanation of defense mechanisms. So happy to have found your channel. 👌
  • Thanks really needed to go through some of my defense mechanisms after some failure and disappointments in my life!

Psychodynamic Psycho-Therapy is promising to bring lasting changes and possibly even preventing psychological disorders... Very under-developed field. I am a doctor and most of what I'm doing is addressing the neurotransmitter changes caused by chronic unmanaged emotional experiences. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
  • @amanr6346
Absolutely brilliant videos! I’m retraining as a Psychotherapist and these videos are so informative and well explained! 😀
  • Excellent . You covered a lot of ground in a clear and provocative presentation . Thank you .
