Bread Pudding

This is my grandma's recipe for bread pudding. It is very delicious!

6 c. milk
6 eggs
3/4 tsp. salt
1-1/2 c. sugar
3 tsp. vanilla
8 c. bread (torn into little pieces)
Cinnamon (to taste)
Raisins (optional)

Scald milk. Place eggs in large mixing bowl. Stir in salt and sugar. Add hot milk. Add bread, vanilla and cinnamon. Place into 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees about an hour. Just before removal from oven, spread about 3 tablespoons of butter over entire surface.

    I’ve been searching for a simple recipe like this for years. I used to work in property management and this wonderful tenant who was a cook in the US Navy and served during WWII made the most simple yet delicious bread pudding I have ever tasted. Nothing compares to it. It was so simple. Anyway he baked it for me as a way to show his appreciation for our outstanding customer service. I’ve searched and tried many recipes. None worked until I found this one! This is it!! Thank you so much!

    I just made this and my fiance loves it! Thank you for the marvelous recipe! Tiny adjustments I made (I only made half of the recipe): Replaced milk with a can of evaporated milk (390g) and substituted the rest with just water. My bread pudding was done at about 45-50 min mark.

    This is one of my fav desserts and I like it with raisins.  They look so yummy, and you are right, you can never have enough cinnamon or vanilla in this dessert.

    For Brits this is more like our Bread and Butter Pudding. Our Bread Pudding, well at least my Nan’s, is made with bread soaked in water, quite different but also delicious. Your Bread Pudding looks scrumptious, I’ll be trying it on Tuesday, got to get through the Panettone I just made first. I can’t remember the last time I baked so many cakes, being on lockdown is going to make us all chubby 😀

    Yummy! I never realized how simple this was to make. I'm going to have to experiment with different kinds of breads. I make my french toast very much like this bread pudding and I found that thick slices of an old dried out french baguette work fantastic...really soaks up the milk/egg/sugar stuff and holds its shape will being fried.

    This is how my Mom made her bread pudding with raisins. I remember her using a potato masher to saturate the bread into the milk. So good! I really loved the leftovers cold after refrigerated.
