Cartoon Network's Over the Garden Wall is the gold standard of TV animated miniseries. In this video I talk about what I love about Greg, Wirt, Beatrice and even The Beast.

What's your favorite episode of Over the Garden Wall? Sign up to get CuriosityStream and Nebula here: curiositystream.com/captainmidnight EDIT: I've been told that someone who sounds like Tom Waits voiced the frog. Apologies. I was doing a rock fact.

When this show ended I kinda felt sad & satisfied at the same time. One of the best cartoons out there.

Cartoon Network should air Over the Garden Wall every October as a Halloween special
  • Along with Gravity Falls, this is one of those shows that makes me sorrowfully lament the decline of 2d animation.

I read that the writers intended for this world to be purgatory - as in Wirt, Greg, and all these other characters are trapped between life and death. Wirt and Greg ended up here because they fell into the river and are almost drowning The beast represents death - in that while stuck in purgatory it depends on Wirt and Greg to leave because they can’t physically get home from here. If they lose hope or despair like the woodsman warned they’ll be taken over by the beast (die) like what almost happened to Wirt. Only when they literally triumph over death and regain hope does Wirt manage to return to our world where he saves Greg
  • The fact that each episode focuses on a unique group/society to me makes it feel almost like Wirt and Greg are stumbling through the pages of an old story book. This has got to be one of my favourite shows of all time and I hope we see more from Pat McHale in the future!

Genuinely my favourite thing Cartoon Network ever did

On a more serious note, as a sophomore with a generalized anxiety disorder, your analysis on Wirt and his school life really lifted my spirits about life. Great vid as always ❤

You didn’t even need to put “Halloween” in the video
  • The word Wirt is Old English for “was,” and the name Gregory can mean “watchful or alert.” It just goes to show you stuff.

The frog was voiced by Jack Jones who's music Patrick McHale loved growing up. He's kinda central to the show.
