Buying an AliExpress Copy of my Historically Accurate Tudor Gown #copycat #comparison

2022-10-03に共有
Hi I’m Samantha of the Tudor Royalty Experience and Tudor Queens Wardrobe. I make high quality historically inspired Tudor Gowns following historically accurate patterns and hand finished gowns.

I became aware that a store on AliExpress was using photographs of my historically accurate gowns! So instead of getting annoyed, I decided to order one of these copies to compare to one of my actual gowns.

A huge shoutout and major Thank You to all my ‘Buy me a coffee’ supporters. Your support has been amazing and I am overwhelmed with your interest in what I do and this project.

  • It happened to Bernadette Banner a few years back, and the copy was a real dumpster fire.
  • Totally agree that the aliexpress gown is a very good costume for the price, and its a shame that they did not use pictures of that gown, instead of using pictures of your gown, which is a totally different beast.

I appreciate that you didn’t completely trash the aliexpress gown, but pointed out the positives and negatives. It helps not to shame someone who may have bought it because they liked it, it was all they could afford, or they had no idea it was a copy of your work

I'm honestly impressed with the quality of the Aliexpress gown. Obviously it's nowhere comparable to yours, but as you said, for that price point it's pretty decent. Too bad the company doesn't really trust their own craft and resorts to false advertising.

A wise lady once said that having the proper under garments to give the proper silhouette can do wonders to making even the most modern dress look historic.
  • I have to mention the "feel factor", which is that wearing one of your gowns makes you feel like a true Queen! I know from experience you need ladies in waiting to dress in and wear one of your gowns and that alone not least the gorgeous fabrics and lacing and attention to detail makes you feel beautiful. <3
  • I appreciate your willingness to use things like velcro on the rental gown. There's a tipping point between enjoying traditional construction and not enjoying the inconvenience of it all. Having to stop what you're doing because your clothes are falling apart is especially bad.
  • Thank you for this video, I was really looking forward to it. I'm actually surprised at the quality of the AliExpress gown as I was expecting a disaster. It looks decent and perfectly passable for a Halloween or costume party. Clearly, it will not last long and will not afford the wearer the experience of a true or near true Tudor gown, but could still be fun to wear. I love that you were more than fair in your comparison; you are gracious and kind. It really is too bad the shop decided to use dishonest means to make their sale. Your work is divine and it would be a dream to own and wear your work! Every dress you make looks sumptuous and so very beautiful! I would love videos on how you got into your craft, how long it took to perfect each part of your dress, what errors have you gotten past and are there any dream dresses you still hope to make.

It's terrible to know one's works are being copied. Here in Lima, Peru, I make my living designing and constructing ballet tutus and there are awful persons who copy rudely my works. They use to be moms of my clients' classmates. I can't stop that since people here love to get things cheaper in spite of bad quality (no hand sewing, no boning, no gauged pleats, etc).
  • I was truly impressed with the costume. It was much better than I thought it would be based on how poorly Bernadette Banner's red gown was copied.
  • When you said how many times this has been worn, I was astonished! It looks brand new!
  • Your gown is lovely but when you removed the green gown the under dress was truly beautiful! OMG! That gold, boned top is stunning. The quality of your work is very impressive!
  • I could definitely tell which was the fake one before you said anything, just from the neckline and trim alone. Love yours!
  • For a future video, May I suggest a behind the scenes of you making these dresses. I’m learning to sew and would love to see the creative process and work behind these amazing gowns!
  • The only rebuttal these dupes need is to just…show them next to the actual outfit. It’s always both hilarious and sad. It’s like putting the British Crown Jewels next to those little plastic ones kids get for their birthday.
  • Yeah this copy is very accurate and high quality for a costume outfit. Tbh before you pointed it out I couldn’t tell right away.
  • Great video! As others have written, I appreciate your evaluting the AliExpress gown "in context." Honestly, if I were attending a costume party, or appearing in a community theater production, I would not want to wear, or be responsible for a gown that took hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to construct. Also totally agree that it's not only unethical for them to use your photos, but also foolish. More people would trust the site if they could see the actual product. Whoever reimagined/sewed the costume did a fine job within the budget.
