This video is a hellscape/

For real though I adore smosh and all of their cast members, even if I fell out of love during the Defy era. Please go and show them all of the love.

How did Smosh save their channel? Ian Hecox. Ian fought tooth and nail to keep Smosh alive behind the scenes (on screen too), and along with him, the remaining cast and crew worked their asses off to give their viewers good content with probably very limited resources.

They truly are in a golden era right now. The content is just so funny and the members are so enjoyable.

Mr. President, a second Golden Age has hit the Smosh channel
  • Defy did many things wrong (which would probably take me an hour to list), but them bringing in the Smosh Squad and Smosh Games crew in a failed attempt to create a variety show for YouTube inadvertently led to Smosh getting its new identity in Shayne, Courtney and Damien. They were pivotal in not letting the ship sink after the Defy shutdown and their ability to work off the new cast members makes it easy for the audience to digest the revolving cast. Even if Damien seems to be focusing on his personal VA and streaming these days he will remain one of my favourite cast members and I wish him the best while enjoying whenever we get him in Smosh videos.
  • Genuinely think it's because of: 1. Ian Hecox. Bro really goes ups and downs from post-Anthony leaving, Defy era, post-Defy era, and now Anthony coming back. He's a great boss. 2. Shayne Topp, A.K.A the backbone of Smosh. He work harder than anyone else and put his 100% mind to Smosh. Not that anyone doesn't work hard, but even another Smosh cast knew Shayne is the backbone of Smosh post-Anthony leaving till now. 3. They build their fanbase exclusive to them so that everyone curious. I don't think non-Smosh fan knew Mexican Salsa Yes, or the comeback of Harambe meme. They know they have loyal fanbase and only focused on them. 4. Speaking of Mexican Salsa Yes, the new cast is brilliant. Amanda, Angela, Chanse, Arasha, and Trevor is bonding with old cast like Shayne, Courtney, Damian, etc. I don't know where Ian and the crew find all these guys but it's working out.

the holy trinity of smosh is definitely Ian, Shayne, and Courtney. those 3 were definitely the hardest workers and the most dedicated to keeping smosh afloat after the defy era and they have really created a solid backbone for what it is now.

i was one of those people whose first smosh video was "we bought smosh." i had watched a good handful of anthony's "i spent a day with" videos previously, and while i was aware of smosh and their youtube story, i'd never seen a smosh video before. so i, like many other curious onlookers, was eager to watch this exciting new development unfold and ultimately ended up falling down a rabbit hole and now smosh is a part of my every day life.

Simple, they have one week of filming and then a break. During which they can actually DO stuff and stay funny instead of being secluded from society like most other people.

smosh are so underrated. they are so good at creating accessible content with good chemistry and likeable cast members even as the onscreen cast shifts in and out - some channels you can't click with once your 'starter' cast leaves but smosh always feels genuine and fresh. it never feels like they're rotating a content farm at you. i truly wish good things for them
  • @ziiclmn
the way you described them as an ensemble made me realize that this is just the theatre kid version of the vlog squad. smosh house when

I literally just started watching Smosh a month or two ago, and I love their new content! The old stuff is not my style in the slightest and I had no idea who Ian or Anthony were, but everyone is so funny and Smosh Games and Smosh Pit are the best, to the point I even bought a ticket to their sitcom live show (and absolutely loved it!)
  • @forthefrogs
They have a great cast of improv artists and comedians with great chemistry. They did a great job in shifting their content and finding their niche while still having fun with each other
  • The difference between the beginning eras and the current eras to me is that during defy they tried to upscale production by hiring more and more people but they didn’t really care all the way and it was too corporate. Then now they just have people who actually care about the content and not a corporate assigned team doing it. The mythical era was people being weeded out honestly
  • @Beefnhammer
I basically skipped the Defy era entirely, and was unaware of that whole debacle until a few years ago. I watched them pretty regularly as a teenager during the original Ian and Anthony era but tuned out around 2011-2012, then stumbled across them again in 2020 during the first lockdown. I don't remember what video it was that got recommended to me but it was most likely a TNTL episode, and I've been a loyal viewer of "new" Smosh ever since.

another banger. another banger by moop

"They still had their most valuable product": me: "Shayne Topp" "-themselves!" Aaah
  • @AKA253
i knew of smosh back in the pre-defy days, but i never liked their original content. i think the first video i saw when i started actively watching the channel was their very first TNTL. and i've seen them all the way through it. their defy days were definitely constricting, you could tell, and being purchased by mythical i think is what kept them afloat creatively long enough to figure out how to sustain themselves.
