  • I'm currently a student at NYU Silver and I very much agree with everything you said. There's a lot of good stuff about the program but also a lot of bad. I was very lucky and had a good experience with field placements, but that is because I'm in NJ, and the field office has less NJ students to place.

Hi! I’m a fellow last-year MSW student as well who goes to school in NYC. I also experienced the same issue regarding lack of macro-work exposure. I entered wanting to do micro/clinical work as well, but I felt that some background on macro work would have been beneficial as well. Wishing you all the best❀️

I am currently in the first year of my Master's Degree at the University of Denver. My MSW program is built around power, privilege, and oppression and I love it. I understand what you were saying about some of the teachers. I have not experienced that myself but I do know of students that felt they weren't treated fairly because of differing opinions. I'm currently in my first internship. I was told the placement specialist was not able to help place me because I had to find one to work around my full-time job. The University of Denver is a VERY expensive program and I was very disappointed that they did not assist me at all with this process. It was very frustrating and stressful time and did not feel supported by the my program. Other than that I've had an amazing experience and would recommend others looking to go into Social Work.

Thanks for this video! I went to NYU School of Social Work too and was so horribly verbally and mentally abused at my last internship, that I became physically ill and dreaded even waking up to go there each day I had to go. These women were licensed to work with children, but they were so toxic and seemed to have automatically decided that any NYU student was a spoiled brat who needed to be cut down to size. One of them would yell and snap at me every time I approached her, and I was required to run a group with her and meet with her weekly to plan the group. She would snap at me and lecture me for turning up to those meetings too early, for having ideas, for not having ideas, you name it. I was gaslit every time I went there. The final straw came when one of them gaslit me so badly that she confronted me in front of the children and screamed at me (yes screamed) for being stupid and not remembering things that I'm told. She had never given me the instructions she was insisting that she had. I had had enough of her, told her I was not going to help her run the group that day if she was going to be so disrespectful, and walked out. The director FOLLOWED ME, cornered me, and told me MY behavior was inappropriate and that I was not allowed to leave. I was on the phone calling my fiance, she told me I couldn't talk to him. I was lucky enough to have a supportive advisor who shared my opinions of the place, but no one ever worked with me to be placed elsewhere. I was told the same thing - This is the real world and what the workplace will be like. I didn't end up actually going into social work in the end for a few reasons, but it did give me tremendous anxiety going into the full-time workplace for the first time and believing that being screamed at and gaslit was a "part of life." I was not the first student to have an issue with that placement and those employees, but somehow NYU kept placing students there year after year and the field office just acted like they didn't have a clue. Also, don't get me started on some of the professors! I loved some, but others - Yes, the "racist cloaked as a social justice warrior" vibe was real.

I am glad you survived this experience. Sounds Horrid. My MSW program was not that bad. But I did learn a lot about myself and ran into a couple of bad dudes. I hope you find what you are looking for. Good luck !
  • Hey! Thank you so much for this video, it is so helpful. Do you think the program would be good for someone who wants to go into School Social Work? Considering the program has a lot of clinical work makes me nervous.
