A few years ago, I enjoyed a delightful bowl of lentil soup in a Turkish-owned cafe - today I'm going to try to make something similar - based on the recipe I have linked below from ThisHealthyTable.

This video also contains a fundraiser for the work that Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) are doing in Turkey and Syria, following the recent tragic earthquake in that region.

This video was supposed to be a collaboration with my friend Babatunde in Nigeria, however, the prevailing situation over there has delayed him from making this soup - please do check out his explanation of what's going on in Nigeria:    • No Soup Today - Riots in My Home Town...

Here's a link to the recipe that I am following: thishealthytable.com/blog/turkish-lentil-soup/

As a turkish person this video was a pleasant suprise. Never would I have expected something like this from you. Thank you for your kindness. Hope you try some of our other dishes in the future aswell!
  • As a Turk, it's my favourite soup, I can tell you. The pronunciation of "mercimek" was not bad, but you certainly sent "çorbası" to a whole new dimension.

To the monetization issue: As usual your approach is spot on, Mr. Shrimp. You really underline the value of forethought. Better this way than "for every 100 likes I send $10 to MSF". Great soup too
  • As a Turkish person, first of all thank you. Second of all there might be tons of dishes you would enjoy, especially mantı which are small dumplings with a garlic yogurt sauce and spicy kinda chili oil on top. Also there is not a single thing wrong about you or anyone else monetizing videos. It is about the thought, not the money you earn. Again thank you for your kindness.

Good on you for raising awareness, both of the terrible circumstances the people of Turkey and Syria are dealing with at the moment, and for the amazing cuisine of the Middle East.

Your pronounciation was actually quite spot on!!!

This was stunning and even won over my husband who “hates soup”. Thank you

I immensely respect your approach to this video, this is a great way to raise awareness and the honesty and down-to-earth-ness with which you approached the topic of monetisation is incredibly refreshing to see, yet another reason you are one of the most respectable and well-deserving youtubers out there. Hats off Mr Shrimp!
  • I shall definitely try this recipe 😋 May Turkiye & Syria come back strong 💪 from the natural calamity soon! Love from India 🇮🇳 ♥

Thank you so much for doing this as a fundraiser. Half my family are in Turkey and it has been a truly devastating time for us. Every penny counts and we appreciate your help

This is what I like about Mike's channel the most: Thoughtful analysis followed by a reasonable conclusion, with none of the sanctimony, posturing, or empty gesturing you find elsewhere. And the soup looks pretty good too!
  • Is really thoughtful to think about Turkey and do this recipe to help us to remember this country. the soup looks delicious

This was lovely, Mike, and I’ll definitely be trying this soup myself—I have all the ingredients here! A word about the donation—I tried to donate from here in Canada, but when I clicked on my donation amount, I got a message from YouTube that said “oops, something went wrong.” Not sure what that’s about, but I’ll just donate through MSF directly. Thank you for this thoughtful, timely video.
  • I love that you're doggedly finding uses for those tiny cast iron pans.
  • As a person living in Turkey for most of my life, never thought I'd see a Turkish recipe here! Great video. Also, I highly recommend chopping some regular white bread into small cubes and frying it with olive oil, then throwing it directly into the soup. The soup softens the bread up and it tastes wonderful.
  • I never thought about the fact that the money raised by those fundraisers are often being distributed way too late. I love that you take the time to think about those things!

I'd like to share that I made this soup yesterday and indeed it was really, really, REALLY GOOD. So thanks for both the recipe and for raising awareness, that's really thoughtful of you.

Thank you for this. As someone with family in syria it we appreciate it, and the delivery still fits within the context of your channel so well done.
